Roger Federer was asked why the one-handed backhand is dissappearing from tennis. Starts by saying “I don’t know” then gives an incredible four-part answer: ▫️Modern coaches grew up playing two-handed backhand and passed it down to students. ▫️One-handed backhands take a lot of time to perfect control and coaches/players...

I love that despite being a champion many times over, his response is grounded in the ‘I don’t knows’ opening up the topic to thinking and discussion rather than being a verdict. Good stuff to watch and learn from.

takes a lot of upper body strength to hit a high topspin one hander, very tough for kids to do it

The one-handed backhand is sub optimal in the world of heavy topsoin, which really makes it a vulnerability. Its why he struggled at Roland Garros. Nadal exploited it with high bouncing heavy TS balls. It reqlly requires low balls which is why he excelled at Wimbledon.

I would also think that kids with “pro” aspirations are starting to play at a much younger age, and they likely don’t have enough strength for the one-handed backhand early on.

1 handed bh is less stable, less rally tolerant, worse in the corners, worse against the high ball. it's also overall slower (not all shots but overall) Fed showed up these disadvantages himself It's ok for recreational level but not at the top of the pro game anymore

My argument pro two-handed backbands would be that you employ both hands and arms and don't put all the pressure on one hand and arm. Serve and forehand are often dominant shots and it makes sense to put the other half to use to be balanced in terms of muscles etc.

It comes down to style/flow vs brute force If you've got style like Roger does, you go for the one-handed backhand. It's way more natural; a backhand feels like a forehand. You don't have to contort your body into something it's not meant to do If you don't have any style and just want to compete for the sake of competing so you can be the best, then you'll go for the more awkward but also technically more powerful two-handed backhand This is why Djokovic won the most grand slam titles, but everyone still feels like Federer was the greatest of all time. Because Federer didn't kill himself to get there, he was just flowing.

One-handed backhand is my best strike. I think in addition to trainers (mine is a woman, two-hand backhander), it's tied to feel. My backhand is incredibly relaxed, controlled and strong, whereas my forehand sucks (which is reversed in most non-pro tennis players).

Why it's declined is no mystery While a pro can murder a 1hbh with more pace/spin then 2H, you rarely have time to deploy that to effect & you can't be offensive off platform. It's also weaker on returns Both these things generate a lot of weak replies = death on the ATP tour.

Far be it from me to correct Federer (huge fan here), but just something to add: sports medicine. The one-handed backhand seems to be more closely linked to lateral epicondylitis and muscle injuries. In an era of such high physical demands, that can make a difference.

Another modern factor is the amount of spin that players can generate. You can empirically conclude that the game today generates more RPM’s in average and it is harder to defend a ball with a lot a spin and bouncing high. In the end Rafa strategy against Roger was key

Review: The Witcher 3 Remastered is a massive overhaul to an all time classic RPG - but I have some thoughts. ▫️ Remaster looks sharper, with much higher quality assets across the board ▫️ Ray tracing has been massively improved. Bounce lighting is way better, water reflections finally look amazing, and the shadows are sharper and more accurate ▫️ I do think the lighting needs another pass in a few key areas like Kaer Morhen ▫️ The original has more contrast while the remaster has an overall brighter look (which some may prefer) ▫️ While the remaster is probably more 'accurate' overall, it does lose some of that stylized look from the original ▫️ Performance is definitely much heavier, especially with ray tracing ▫️ The dynamic camera during combat is a big improvement ▫️ Dodging feels smoother and animations are a lot snappier and more responsive ▫️ Meditation is a lot better, it happens in realtime so you can cancel it exactly at the right moment ▫️ Roach handles better and doesn't get stuck on objects quite as much ▫️ Skill tree system has been overhauled ▫️ Transmog has been added (unlocked at Skellige) ▫️ Photo Mode has been greatly improved ▫️ Movement feels better and more responsive There are a lot more changes, but overall it's a nice improvement to an already amazing game. Nothing groundbreaking but some pretty good changes for a free update! The visuals are absolutely stunning in places like Skellige and Toussaint. And it does look much sharper and higher resolution overall. But the lighting needs a few more tweaks in the areas I mentioned to retain the look and feel of the original. It certainly doesn't look bad, just not quite as punchy. Overall, I really enjoyed my time with it and was immediately hooked back into the world of The Witcher. Can't wait for Songs of the Past next year, and of course, The Witcher IV! Final Score: 9.5/10 Thanks to CD Projekt Red for providing code for review. #TheWitcher #TheWitcher3 #Witcher3Remastered

MATEJ GAŠTAROV (19) Crvena Zvezda 🇲🇰 DM How did I find Gaštarov? Gaštarov was added to my watchlist after showing strong passing qualities on my data screening. He ranked amongst the best 18-21 year old DM/CMs outside of the T5 leagues (top divisions only) for forward passes and passes in the opposition's half. This search also coincided with him playing for North Macedonia against Slovenia last night, so I tuned in to watch 👀 Here are my live notes from the game vs Slovenia (90 mins played)... ▫️Shields well to back and side pressure/contact ▫️Exceptionally press resistant ▫️Very comfortable first receiver ▫️Incredibly composed and wants the ball even in high pressure situations - indicates a confident mentality ▫️Pausa - tempo control - has the ability to speed up or slow the game down ▫️Great mobility - agile - loose ankles and flexible hips allow him to pivot effortlessly ▫️Tight turning radius ▫️Minimal angle bias due to the fact he can orient body well and is comfortable passing off either foot ▫️Can shift laterally at pace ▫️Quick over short distances and fast over long - gangly legs enable long strides and good ground coverage ▫️Vision - sees passes others don't, but is occasionally out of sync with receivers. Would benefit from teammates who read the game at his speed ▫️Switches that stretch the pitch - including weak foot switches with lovely tech. 6/8 long passes completed ▫️Drops between CBs or covers for a rotating/advancing CB ▫️Strong ball winning capabilities - 3/3 tackles; 4/7 ground duels; 2 interceptions; 10 ball recoveries ▫️Can make difficult passes whilst in motion - not limited to being a static orchestrator ▫️Spatial awareness and scans enable him to receive in space regularly ▫️Delayed touches to draw pressure - which he then navigates away from or against opposition momentum with passes or carrying ability ▫️Sliding tackles when needed Plays with maturity - visibly vocal and regularly gesturing demands to teammates ▫️Doesn't rush or get flustered under pressure ▫️Decel and positioning on entries could be a bit better - tries to preempt the opponent and bites too hard which leaves him on an island ▫️Uses arms well to maintain beneficial distance under contact - solid framing under armpit ▫️Despite height he manages to sink hips and create a better centre of gravity for himself to maintain great balance and solidity ▫️Good processing speed - lots of one and two touch play ▫️Decent level of perception-action coupling [ability to perceive then act on ever-changing information] - he did commit to certain unsuccessful passes where he had a small window to change his mind ▫️Can put disguise on passes ▫️Forward thinking and great intent, but not opposed to retention in certain situations ▫️Can carry-to-pass efficiently ▫️Predominantly a passer to build and progress play ▫️Positionally disciplined - rarely in final third ▫️Light first touch - nice tech when controlling the ball and on his variety of passing techniques, of which he can use different faces of the foot ▫️Quality passing range and empathy for the receiver across various distances ▫️Good comfort in small spaces - but will punish when he is given time to pick a killer pass Impressive to say this was all on a pretty poor pitch - clumps of turf kept ripping up which made the pitch bobbly. First impressions are he has T5 potential. Either way, GAŠTAROV appears to be a profile worth tracking, and I'll be watching some more 90s this season so I can evaluate him further. Crvena Zvezda will be competing in the Conference League this season, so there's a chance to see him against higher level oppostion including; Copenhagen, Gent Lugano and Trabzonspor. 📈📈
