He supposedly went into the studio one night and recorded a 45-minute solo track about his breakup with Susannah Melvoin. When he finished, he told his engineer to do something he’d never done before - erase the tapes. She begged him not to do it because, according to her, it was the most perfect song she’d ever heard. The next day, he recorded a new version of the song and kept adding stuff to it… Drums. Horns. Everything. Then he forgot it. It wasn’t on an album or a single. It was just a song he made. It wasn’t until 2020 when his estate released a shortened version of it. “Wally” Happy birthday to a musical genius.

No shade to the song, because it basically opens my show. It just felt too intense, maybe that’s the word. ‘yes baby’ and ‘make you mine’ were enough of that. It could’ve also been on the deluxe, but I was trying not to fill the deluxe tracklist with an old song.”
