No wonder that chorus hits so hard. You can always hear the raw pain in every single note.

“Super Trouper” is the title track of the eponymous album Super Trouper (1980), ABBA’s seventh studio album. It was the last song composed and recorded for the project, practically in the final stretch of the sessions at Polar Studios in Stockholm. Released as a single in November 1980 (the album’s second single after “The Winner Takes It All”), it became ABBA’s ninth and final UK #1 (three weeks at the top). It also reached #1 in Belgium, West Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands and peaked at #45 in the US.

“Kiss from a Rose” was written by Seal around 1987 but only became a worldwide phenomenon after its inclusion in the 1995 film Batman Forever. Originally released on his 1994 album Seal II, the song attracted only modest attention before director Joel Schumacher insisted on featuring it during the film's end credits and in its promotional campaign. The renewed exposure propelled the song to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, while it also reached the Top 10 in the UK and several other countries. At the 1996 Grammy Awards, it won Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance

“Teenage Dirtbag” was written by Wheatus frontman Brendan B. Brown and draws on his own adolescence on Long Island. Released in 2000 as the first single from Wheatus, the track became one of the defining anthems of the era. It reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart, spent four weeks at No. 1 in Australia where it was the country’s second-best-selling single of 2000, and also topped the charts in Austria and Flanders. In the United States it peaked at No. 7 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart but never entered the Billboard Hot 100. Its success was boosted by the soundtrack of the film Loser, and Jason Biggs and Mena Suvari also appear in the music video. After Columbine, the radio edit changed the line “He brings a gun to school” to “He brings his mates to fights.”

"Kiss From a Rose" was written by Seal around 1987, but was only very successful in 1995 thanks to the film Batman Forever. Released in 1994 on the album Seal II, the song almost went unnoticed. Director Joel Schumacher loved the track and insisted on putting it in the end credits of the film. After that, the track reached #1 in the US and won three Grammys in 1996 (Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance).

“Iris” was written by Goo Goo Dolls frontman John Rzeznik specifically for the 1998 film City of Angels, starring Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan. At the time, Rzeznik was staying in a hotel in Los Angeles when music supervisor Danny Bramson asked him to write a song for the movie. The track became a radio phenomenon, spending a then-record 18 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 Airplay chart. Because no commercial single was released in the US the song was initially ineligible for the Billboard Hot 100. When Billboard changed its rules in December 1998 to allow airplay-only songs onto the chart, “Iris” debuted at No. 9 and ultimately peaked there. It became the Goo Goo Dolls' signature song, was nominated for three Grammy Awards and went on to become one of the defining alternative-pop hits of the late 1990s.

“Time After Time” was written by Cyndi Lauper and Rob Hyman of The Hooters for Lauper’s 1983 debut album, She’s So Unusual. It was a late addition to the record: producer Rick Chertoff felt the album still needed one more song so Lauper and Hyman stayed behind at the Record Plant and wrote it together. The title came from a TV Guide listing for the 1979 science-fiction film "Time After Time", Lauper meant it only as a placeholder but every alternative sounded wrong. Released in 1984 as the second single from She’s So Unusual, after “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “Time After Time” became Lauper’s first No. 1, spending two weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and also topping the Adult Contemporary chart. It reached No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart and was nominated for Song of the Year at the 1985 Grammy Awards. Miles Davis later recorded his own version for the 1985 album "You’re Under Arrest", helping turn the song into a standard far beyond pop radio.

“Burning Heart” was recorded by Survivor for the 1985 film Rocky IV, after Sylvester Stallone personally commissioned the band to create another high-energy song following the success of “Eye of the Tiger.” Written by Jim Peterik and Frankie Sullivan, the track perfectly captured the film’s Cold War narrative. Released in 1985, the track became a massive hit, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks, where it was kept from the top spot by Dionne Warwick & Friends’ “That’s What Friends Are For.” It also reached No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart and topped the charts in Belgium and Switzerland. The song became Survivor’s biggest hit with Jimi Jamison on lead vocals, while the Rocky IV soundtrack climbed to No. 10 on the Billboard 200 and was later certified Platinum in the United States.

“Seven Nation Army” was written by Jack White for The White Stripes’ 2003 album Elephant. The riff came first: he stumbled on it during a soundcheck at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel in January 2002 and initially thought it could work as a James Bond theme. Released in 2003 as the lead single from Elephant, the song reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative chart, No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart and only No. 76 on the Billboard Hot 100. It won the Grammy for Best Rock Song in 2004, while Elephant won Best Alternative Music Album. Neither the American nor the British label had wanted it as the first single. The riff later escaped the song entirely: fans of Club Brugge began chanting it in 2003 and by the 2006 World Cup it had become a stadium anthem, sung without a single word of the original lyric. Two decades on, crowds at football grounds and other sports events are still chanting it.

"Need You Tonight" is a song by the Australian rock band INXS, released as the first single from their 1987 album, Kick, as well as the fourth song on the album. It is the only INXS single to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also achieved their highest charting position in the United Kingdom, where the song reached number two on the UK Singles Chart; however, this peak was only reached after a re-release of the single in November 1988. On its first run on the UK charts in October 1987, it stalled at No. 58. It was one of the last songs recorded for the album, yet it would arguably become the band's signature song.

“Cruel Summer” was released in 1983 as a standalone single by Bananarama and was later included on the American edition of the group’s 1984 self-titled album. Inspired by a rare heatwave in London, the song captured the frustration and restlessness of a sweltering city summer, while its video was filmed in New York during another bout of intense heat. The single reached #8 in the UK, but it was its inclusion in The Karate Kid (1984) that gave it major exposure in the United States, where it reached #9 on Billboard Hot 100 and became Bananarama’s first American Top 10 hit.

“Easy Lover” has a remarkably spontaneous origin. The song was written by Philip Bailey, Phil Collins and bassist Nathan East near the end of the sessions for Bailey's 1984 solo album, Chinese Wall, which Collins was producing. East started playing a riff on the piano and within about 20 minutes the three musicians had the basic song. They recorded a rough demo that same night, still singing the temporary phrase “choosy lover.” Collins took the idea home, returned with the lyrics and the title “Easy Lover,” and the finished track came together in roughly 48 hours. Released in the United States in November 1984 and in the UK in February 1985, “Easy Lover” became a huge international hit, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spending four weeks at No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart. It also reached No. 3 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and No. 5 on the Mainstream Rock chart. The song was nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 1986 Grammy Awards.

“Karma Chameleon” has often been interpreted as a reflection of Boy George's turbulent relationship with Culture Club drummer Jon Moss. George himself, however, described the song more broadly as being about the fear of alienation, changing yourself to please other people and the consequences of not being true to who you are. That ambiguity gives the seemingly cheerful song a more bittersweet meaning. Recorded for Culture Club's 1983 album Colour by Numbers, “Karma Chameleon” became the band's biggest worldwide hit. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, becoming their first and only No. 1 there, and also reached No. 1 in the UK, where it spent six weeks at the top and became the country's best-selling single of 1983. The colourful music video, directed by Peter Sinclair, was filmed at Desborough Island in Weybridge.
