Director John Frankenheimer insisted that the car chases in Ronin be filmed as realistically as possible. Many of the stunt drivers were professional racers, and the production used specially modified high-performance cars capable of reaching remarkable speeds through the real streets of Paris and Nice, France. This commitment to practical stunt work and authenticity helped make Ronin one of the most celebrated car-chase films in cinema history.

Ronin is just another example of the depth & quality of Robert De Niro’s filmography. It was the late ‘90s & De Niro teamed up with director John Frankenheimer, who dove head-first into practical filmmaking. Frankenheimer didn’t take a single shortcut in making this movie & I’ve always felt like that’s the reason this is such a timeless espionage film. Not only is the story well-done (co-written by David Mamet, who sort of owned the ‘90s) but Frankenheimer made everything as real as possible, and you feel that authenticity when you watch this movie. It’s why Ronin has barely aged since its release.

As he put it, “That’s kind of a classic mob guy thing. They carry cash rolled up instead of in a wallet.” Property master Robert Griffon Jr. had to withdraw thousands from his own bank account to replace the prop money, so all the $20s and $50s De Niro passes around in the film are real. The problem was that the production had also hired real mobsters as extras, so whenever real money was used, after Scorsese yelled “cut”, the whole crew had to freeze while every single bill was counted.
