This is incredible. There is one thing for me to point out though: The images are right now very big and load slowly. This image here is PNG and has 531kB - I converted it to 64 colors and saved it and it's down to 81kB (Twitter will probably butcher it)

You're right. It didn't occur to me, but these drawings were pretty big. I compressed the ones on this page, but I have a bunch on other pages too, eventually... Thanks!

A valve spring inside a running engine does more than compress and release. The spring also rotates slowly along its axis with each cycle, and that rotation is intentional. The valve face strikes the same metal seat thousands of times a minute, and without rotation any single contact point would wear down unevenly. By spreading that contact around the full circumference, the rotation evens out heat and mechanical wear so the valve seals cleanly for much longer. White marks painted on the coils make the rotation visible on camera. Without them, the movement would be impossible to see.
