The Pathetic State of Gutkha Spitters in Bengaluru – A Shame on Civic Sense It’s disheartening and utterly shameful to witness the sorry state of the foot overbridge in Whitefield, Bengaluru the one that connects the Kadugodi Bus Stand to the Whitefield Railway Station. A structure built with the intent of easing pedestrian movement and ensuring safety has now become a canvas of disgrace, thanks to a certain section of irresponsible individuals who chew gutkha and mindlessly spit it all over the bridge walls and floors. What should have been a clean, functional public utility now stands defaced with red stains and foul odour, all thanks to the gutkha-spitting menace. The entire stretch of the bridge is littered with spit marks, especially on the sides, as if it were made solely for these shameless acts. It raises a serious question—who is to blame here? The people who consumed and spat gutkha in public without an ounce of civic sense? Or the authorities who built the bridge with good intentions but seemingly failed to enforce cleanliness and maintain discipline? Let’s not mince words the primary blame lies with the gutkha spitters. These individuals, with absolute disregard for public hygiene and basic decency, have turned a public asset into a public toilet. They don’t think twice before leaving behind stains that not only make the place unhygienic but also dangerous, especially during the monsoon when the stairs and paths become slippery. This is not just disrespect to public property—it’s disrespect to the entire community. Today, I led an inspection of the Obalende underbridge and motor park area, where the Lagos State Government has issued an immediate quit notice to squatters occupying the space. This is not a sudden action. Notices were issued as far back as 2024, and we are now moving to redesign the area into a clean, safe, and functional public space. The location will be handed over to a private sector partner for redevelopment and long-term maintenance as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility. The proposed design includes a motor garage, public toilets, sleeping bays, and electric vehicle charging points. Our objective is to end environmental degradation, remove criminal elements, and ensure that underbridge spaces serve the public in a sustainable way. I also inspected Oja Oba on Lagos Island and the Adeniji–Ilubirin loop as part of our broader effort to put open spaces to proper and productive use across the state. Let me reiterate that our environmental laws on street trading and illegal waste disposal remain fully in force. Lagos must be orderly, safe, and functional for everyone, and we will continue to act firmly and responsibly to achieve this. #CleanerLagos

It is disappointing to hear DK Shivakumar justify VIP ticket demands by saying that MLAs have a “right” because they are part of the government. This logic is fundamentally flawed and raises serious concerns about misuse of power and privilege. MLAs are elected representatives, not entitled elites. They are part of the government because the people of Karnataka voted them into power. The real stakeholders of the government are the citizens, not the politicians themselves. If being “part of the government” is the basis for receiving free IPL tickets, then by that same logic, every citizen of Karnataka who collectively forms and sustains the government should also be entitled to such benefits. If all citizens demanded free tickets, would that be acceptable? Clearly not. It would be financially unsustainable and absurd. Then how is it justified for a select group of elected officials to claim such privileges at the expense of fairness and transparency? This creates a perception that public office is being used for personal perks rather than public service. Moreover, events like the IPL are commercial in nature, not government functions. Providing preferential treatment to politicians undermines the principles of equality and accountability. It sends a message that those in power operate by a different set of rules than the common people. Instead of defending such demands, leaders should set an example by respecting ethical boundaries and avoiding any appearance of impropriety. How many times should taxpayers pay for the same road ? Just 2–3 months after patchwork was carried out, the asphalt has already deteriorated to the point where it’s difficult to even tell that repairs were done. When we spoke to the engineer, we were informed that the earlier work was carried out by BWSSB, and because of poor quality, a fresh estimate is now being considered to repair the same stretch again. This raises some important questions, not just for one road, one constituency, or one department, but the entire city. If public money has already been spent once, who is accountable when the work fails within a matter of months? Was the restoration inspected before being accepted? Have we our such contractor? Does the contractor have a defect liability period or maintenance obligation, and if so, why should taxpayers pay again instead of enforcing those contractual obligations? How much of Bengaluru’s infrastructure budget is being spent on redoing work that should have lasted much longer? This isn’t about targeting any individual or political party. It’s about demanding transparency, quality, and accountability in the use of PUBLIC funds. Every rupee spent comes from the people. Every failed project deserves EXPLANATION. Every contractor and every department responsible for public works should be held to the same standard. There have been a lot of rumour about the sale of an IndianPremierLeague franchise specifically Royal Challengers Bengaluru - well in the past they have been denied. But it seems the owners have finally decided to take it off their balance sheet and sell it. I am sure having won the IPL last season and also with its strong base of fans and off course the Team itself and a great management team - it could be the only Team which would be available as a whole as an#ipl franchise. I am sure one of the Big Global funds or a Sovereign Fund would desperately like to have them as part of their investment strategy and India strategy. There can be no better investment opportunity I could think of then this one. Good luck to whoever can get their hands on to it. It definitely will set a new record valuation which will just go to show that IPL is the not only the fastest growing Global Sporting league but also the most valuable. That new price that #rcb sets will become the new floor price for all teams. Good to luck to all. I am sure #citibank will do a great job auctioning the team to prospective buyers.

I’m not sure if this guy was joking or not but I genuinely couldn’t believe what I was hearing. A migrant filming himself during a walk by a local river claimed that because he can’t buy halal duck in the UK, he would simply take one of the live ducks from a public park, take it home, and eat it. These ducks are part of our public parks and communities they are not there to be stolen, slaughtered, or treated as someone’s personal food supply. Respect for local laws, customs, wildlife and public spaces should be the bare minimum. What on earth is going on if people think this is acceptable behaviour?

Just hopped off with Tim Stenovec & Carol Massar on Bloomberg. Lots of acronyms flying around with EIPP etc but the basic way to think about it is this is the industry’s Waymo moment. No one had any idea what those cars were when they arrived in cities, but they rolled out methodically and showed everyone they were safe/quiet/convenient/etc. Now they’re just a part of normal life. Air taxi flights will begin via eIPP later this year in a similar way (just a few, no passengers). Good chance to bring the public and cities along for the journey and build the muscle needed to operate at scale.
