However, every effort is being made to ensure a smooth domestic supply of petroleum products. #WATCH | Amid ongoing tensions in West Asia, the Central Government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, to ensure the uninterrupted availability of natural gas and LPG. The Act empowers the government to regulate the production, supply, distribution and trade of essential commodities and take strict action against hoarding, black marketing and violations. LPG cylinders have been declared an essential commodity, and authorities are closely monitoring supplies across the country. The government has also directed efforts to increase LPG production, prioritise supply for essential sectors and diversify import routes to maintain energy security. It should be noted that India was previously importing approximately 60 per cent of its #LPG requirements from Gulf countries such as Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait and 40 per cent is produced domestically. Procurement has now been actively diversified, with cargoes being secured from the United States, Norway, Canada, Algeria, and Russia, in addition to available Gulf sources. The LPG Control Order issued on 8 March 2026 directed all refineries to maximise LPG yields and channel the entire output of C3 and C4 hydrocarbon streams, comprising propane, butane, propylene, and butenes, exclusively to the three Oil Marketing Companies for domestic cooking gas. Hence, in the last 5 days, LPG production has been increased by 28 per cent through refinery directives, and further procurement is actively underway. The Government’s foremost priority is that the kitchens of India’s 33+ crore families, especially the poor and the underprivileged, do not face any shortage. Domestic supply is fully protected and the delivery cycle is unchanged. The standard time from booking to delivery for domestic LPG cylinders remains 2.5 days, unchanged from pre-crisis norms. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has placed the actual facts on record in Parliament, and they demolish the panic narrative being pushed by Congress leaders and their ecosystem. In just the last five days, LPG production has already been increased by 28%, and additional procurement is underway to further strengthen supply. Yesterday, Congress leaders circulated a photograph of long LPG queues on social media to attack the government and claim there is a shortage. The truth? But more importantly, our LPG, the cylinder gas, which you use in kitchens, about 60% used to come from the Strait of Hormuz. Now we had to make arrangements. I'm amazed at what we were able to do. Our domestic production of LPG prior to the crisis was 35,000 or 36,000 metric tons per day. We ramped up our domestic production from 36,000 to 54,000 metric tons. This by itself is a mind-boggling thing... Tell me any one country where prices have remained the same, and there has been no shortage anywhere in spite of the best efforts of some people to try to black market and raise false rumours. If I looked at some statistics, petrol consumption has gone up by 6%. In a crisis, there'd been no dry outs. Every petrol pump in the country has had petrol and diesel. LPG supply is more than enough. We have done some good things. We have ramped up LPG production. We brought consumption down a little..."
