🇬🇧 Rupert Lowe raises the point that many people will find uncomfortable. He points out the contrast between how some countries treat the crime of rape and how Britain has dealt with some of its most serious cases involving vulnerable victims. His argument is that societies send a message... through the consequences they attach to the worst crimes. We are sending the wrong message. Perhaps what we are saying is British and European girls deserve to be raped. Deserve to be sacrificed on the altar of Allah. And this is purely spoken by our own inaction in the course of justice. If a country treats the rape of women and children as among the most serious offences imaginable, then the punishment and the justice system should reflect that seriousness. Meanwhile, in Britain, many victims and families have spent years asking why offenders were not stopped sooner, why warnings were missed, and why justice was so often delayed. Rupert Lowe kept his promise and held the privately funded independent grooming gang inquiry. He presented some of the harrowing testimonies from survivors at Monday's e-petition debate in Parliament, about the mandatory collection of data on the ethnicity, religion, and nationality of child abuse offenders. Reform and Conservative MPs also attended and made valuable contributions. But independent Muslim MP Ayoub Khan used his speech to blame white men for the crimes, and accused those talking about grooming gangs of "revealing a prejudice" and being "far less interested in victims than in validating their own hatred of ethnic minorities, Muslims, migrants and foreign nationals." Labour MP Jonathan Brash did the same, saying, "the vast majority of perpetrators are not from grooming gangs or ethnic minority backgrounds", and that "It is of genuine concern to me that we do not narrow the focus of this debate" by discussing grooming gangs. Liberal Democrat MP Cameron Thomas used his speech to accuse Elon Musk of starting riots in Britain, and Rupert Lowe of not really caring about victims because of his large following on X. Yesterday in Parliament we debated the budgetary allocation for the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Children and Social Empowerment. Rape and sexual violence against women and children was heavily discussed. Unfortunately, instead of proposing solutions, many of my fellow Parliamentarians only politicised the situation. Politicisation of rape does not address the conditions that lead to rape or deal with its terrible aftermath. The solution is to take definitive steps to solve it, which is why I am campaigning for: 1. Comprehensive Sexuality Education for children and young adults - that can empower them to take control and make informed decisions on their sexuality and relationships. 2. Decriminalisation of abortion - so that women are empowered to make decisions on their bodies. Reports from the Health Ministry show that about 650 unsafe abortions take place everyday. This means that our laws are putting the lives of 250,000 women at risk every year. 3. Increased Judicial Safety for women and children - so that our justice system doesn’t penalise the very people that need its protection. 4. Speedy resolution of cases pertaining to rape and sexual violence - The average child rape case can take 7-10 years to resolve, leaving the victims in limbo and without any justice. Sri Lanka’s statistics on sexual violence against women and children are alarming. - Every 2 hours a child is sexually molested. - Every 90 minutes, a woman is raped. - 62% of women killed were murdered by either an intimate partner, ex-partner or family member. A 2013 UN Survey on Male Sexual violence in SL showed that 15% of men interviewed admitted to having raped at least once, with the majority who admitted to rape saying they did so because they were entitled to. 20% of those respondents admitted to raping for fun or out of boredom. In this country, we have a history of safeguarding oppressors, and it is much the same with rape or sexual violence, where police tend to have more sympathy with the rapists than the victims. This is reflected in the chilling statistic that only 3% of those who admitted to rape in the above study were arrested. And, according to a 2021 University of Kelaniya study, only 5% of cases relating to women murdered between 2013-2017 have concluded. These figures should make us ashamed and alarmed. Which is why I am committed to support reforms to create a safer and more just country for our women and children.

This is chilling and uncomfortable. But, I get it. In a weird but compelling way, I get it. As a people, we move on. We move to the next headline quickly. We are shocked, we lament, protest, etc but eventually ... WE MOVE ON. This AI rendering of a story is morbid and uncomfortable... And even triggering. But, dammit, maybe this is what is needed. Evil gets shielded and protected by our need to not want to be confronted by truths that make us uncomfortable. How many stories of families hiding traumas and crimes of familial culprits because they don't want to expose the shame of umdeni? What does that do but protect perpetrators? Our discomfort about our reality can be a hindrance to accountability. The shame and discomfort should be reserved for the culprit. We are surprised how recidivism is so high in Mzansi, but we forget that we protect criminals' dignity more than the victims'. There is a lot that is cringe-y about AI and it should be regulated. This, though chilling, I feel it is a necessary evil if it will make Olorato and many like her not to become old news because today we have moved on to a new shocking headline. Remember her and live with the reality that you or someone you love and/or know may be next.

Why oh why doesn’t our establishment accept that its only moral obligation is to the British state and the British people? Not to global welfare. Not to international liberalism. To us, and our country, and our self-government. That is it. The moment they do that, so many of the issues which plague our society become easier to manage. Immigration is no longer a question of benefitting the largest number of global citizens but about boosting the British economy while keeping British people safe. Foreign relations is not about promoting obscure minority rights in far off lands but about securing British interests wherever necessary. And most of all we drop the idea that every culture in the world is the same and therefore anybody can fit in here, and celebrate the fact that Britain has a highly distinct, highly evolved culture all of its own that we want to cherish and protect. What’s so difficult about that?
