The aircraft, designated Su-57D and converted from the T-50-4 airframe, was flown by Hero of Russia test pilot Sergei Bogdan. One of the most interesting changes is the evolution of the Su-57’s electro-optical sensor complex. Newer aircraft feature more distributed sensors around the fuselage, expanding passive electro-optical coverage and giving the pilot a broader picture of the surrounding battlespace. The upgrade shows that Russia is continuing to evolve the Su-57 rather than treating it as a finished design. Along with sensor improvements, newer batches have received updated onboard systems and expanded weapons capabilities. June 10 1964: a prototype XV-4, an experimental VTOL jet, crashes in Georgia (US), test pilot William J. Ingram dies. Control was lost after the aircraft transitioned from conventional to vertical flight. Reportedly, the pilot chose not to eject so he could fly the stricken jet away from a residential area. The airman lost in the accident was an Army civil test pilot, William J. Ingram, aged 43.
