Our newest rescue, Arthi, is finding his footing at our Nursery. He was found all alone in the Tsavo wilderness, frightened and unsure. But this uncertain little bull who arrived in August has been replaced by a friendly, outgoing elephant who has really bonded with his Keepers. It’s the little signs that show he’s truly settled - from trumpeting for his milk, to taking the lead on walks, and joining in playful games of peekaboo. Taroha is four years old and has already taken up the mantle of protector of the herd. It's exhausting work: when Daba tried to push Kipekee for no reason, Taroha stepped in. When Olomunyak tried the same trick with Alia, Taroha came to the rescue again. So when we found him completely horizontal on the banks of a little pool with his trunk in the water, we knew he'd earned the break. An orphan, Taroha arrived via a JCB bucket and a flight from Tsavo West. He had a difficult start and a best friend named Mokogodo who helped him through it. Become part of his family too:

Bungalu is a survivor! Small, skeletal, and totally alone, he had been spotted several times, but only for a moment before hiding away. On 27th February, we mobilised a rescue with the KWS – but just before our helicopter arrived, he zigzagged past everyone on the ground and vanished. Two days later, following a monumental storm, two local Maasai men found and secured the calf - it was a miracle to find him still alive. We raced to the scene and flew him to our Kaluku Unit. There we discovered another twist in Bungalu’s story: He had deep claw marks laced across his back. The wounds had scarred over, but he had clearly been pursued by lions. Bungalu was a hard-won case. He was skin-and-bones, riddled with ulcers and parasites. For weeks, he remained in fight-or-flight mode, barely sleeping as he rocked in his stable. But despite all he’d been through, Bungalu embraced his Keepers from the outset. He was visibly relieved to be part of a family again. ⭐️ Bungalu’s care is entirely funded by donations. Bristol was always one of Kyle’s favorite tracks. He loved racing under the lights, found so much success there, and the iconic M&M’S car holds some of the best memories of his career and our life together. Going back without him will be heartbreaking. He should be there. But I’m so grateful to be able to tell you that those iconic M&M’S colors will be coming back to Bristol, one last time, on the 54 car. It’s a chance to honor him at a place he loved so much, surrounded by our NASCAR family and the fans who loved him too. I know Kyle would want us to be there, to keep showing up, keep racing, and keep carrying his legacy forward. We hope you’ll join us at Bristol as we celebrate Kyle, the incredible legacy he left behind, and the love he had for racing that will always be a part of our family. ❤️🏁

When a new orphan arrives, our ex-orphans come home. In September 2022, we made an unusual call: we sent our newest rescue – a two-year-old orphan of drought – straight to our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit, bypassing the Nursery. Daylight was running out, Umani was close to his place of reintegration, and we thought the older orphans would be a good fit for him. Our ex-orphan Lima Lima had been away in the forest for three days, yet somehow she still knew... the day Kapei arrived, she walked straight up to his stockade and demanded the Keepers let her in. She spent hours with him, sharing his lucerne, before slipping back out. That formative moment set the tone for Kapei's recovery – from then on, he always knew he had a herd behind him. More recently, he has started to join them in the wild too, spending multiple days away from his Keepers at a time. By adopting, you can welcome an orphaned elephant, rhino or giraffe into your heart, and help fund the milk and Keeper care they need to return to the wild:

Chapeyu’s story is a unique one, given his age: On 13th February, our SWT/KWS Kulalu Anti-Poaching Team reported a speared elephant near the eastern boundary of Tsavo East NP. Our pilot flew to the scene and found a young bull — seven or eight years old — with a serious wound to his front ankle joint. He cut a lonely figure, trying his best to hobble along. The injury was dire, and at his age, he was also highly vulnerable to lions. The plan was for the SWT/KWS Tsavo Vet Unit to treat him in the field and let him heal. But as the operation unfolded, it became clear he was on a fine line between life and death. The spear wound was terribly infected, compromising the joint. If the bull was to have any hope of survival, multiple follow-ups would be required. To preserve the bull’s life and give him the care he needed, Dr. Limo deemed it necessary to bring him to our Voi Reintegration Unit. While certainly older than a typical orphan rescue, he fell into the adolescent age bracket and would be in good company among our Voi orphan herd. VIDEO: A man who was abducted by bandits for over a year has been found along Birnin Gwari–Tagina road in Niger State. He says he is from Zangon Daura (Zango LGA), Katsina State. Those who came across him said he appears to be struggling mentally. Hopefully, his family or someone who knows him will see this and help get him back home. Imagine spending over a year in captivity and finally finding yourself alone on the road, far from home. He has already endured enough. Chuck Norris, a martial artist and actor, has passed away at the age of 86. His family released the following statement: “It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning. While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace. To the world, he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength. To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family. Toto doesn’t hold back when it comes to greetings! This characterful bull, with beautiful eyes and his sweet little tusks, arrived into our care in the most incredible circumstances. Meet Natibu – the leggiest rascal at our Kaluku Nursery. All the better since he has never met a race he didn't want to compete in, especially when precious milk is involved. As our Keepers wrote recently, "Natibu is such a rascal. He likes chasing, charging, and otherwise teasing anyone and everyone, regardless of species or size." Considering his rescue story, we couldn't be prouder to see him charging around: as a tiny newborn, he fell into a manhole that left him completely stuck. At our Kaluku Nursery, Lemeki adopted him as her little brother — and she's favoured him ever since. Today, Thamana is the biggest and strongest bull in the Voi dependent herd, but he wears his strength lightly. We gave him a quick lift to our Kaluku Unit, where he was ushered into the heart of an eclectic, loving family. From fragile to flourishing — it’s hard to believe how far Toto has come. When he was rescued - brought to us in Ithumba by some of our ex-orphans! - Toto was frightened and alone. He arrived at our Kaluku Neonate Nursery in poor condition, requiring round-the-clock care, but even then with a big personality! Today, he’s one of the most steady and nurturing elephants in our little Kaluku herd — with a big soft spot for his pseudo elephant sister 'Korbessa'. Little Daba and Maxwell, sharing a morning hello! Maxwell is the most popular member of our Nursery herd. Because he is blind – the result of a congenital eye condition – he has a forever home with us and his own spacious boma to lord over. (Black rhinos are solitary by nature and very territorial.) But with that said, Max has appointed visiting hours. When he hears the elephants mobilising in the morning, he waits by his gate to receive them as they head into the forest. Very often, there is a queue waiting to have their moment with the black rhino. On this particular day, lucky little Daba got the first slot! Meet Max and support him through an adoption:

SOMEONE DUMPED THE DOG IN OUR AREA!!!!💔 Mom here: So sorry we’ve been absent this last week, but we were all taken by this sad situation😞This is a third dog that made his way to our home within 10 years of owning our lake home! Third dog not chipped, not neutered, full of ticks, malnourished with signs of abuse. My husband found him, gave him water, food, earned his trust he named him temporarily Johnny Boy. Knowing his condition we truly didn’t want him to go back where he came from, but we still did the right thing & made the post on local Facebook & spread the word between the locals, as expected, no one tried to reach out. We couldn’t get him closed to Arći as he was full of ticks. We didn’t know if he was a dog friendly & Arći being a little puppy I did not want to take that risk. We created him a space with comfortable bed in our storage room short walk from the house, but also behind the fence where Arći hangs out. Meanwhile I called at least 20 shelters to try to find him a spot, they were all full. That is where the sad part happens when you lose a hope but we were determined to help him… Johnny Boy was hanging out with my husband daily, being on a job site with him, enjoying rides in off road buggy, being such a gentle boy! Now the happy part: few days ago, one of our helper that works for us saw the dog on the job site & fell in love with him. He took a picture of him, showed him to his family & reached out to us that he would like to meet him with his dog & his kids. Well, the rest is a history. They absolutely loved him. It turns out Johnny Boy now Moses is dog friendly & really really loves the kiddos. He now has a beautiful home, loving family, few acres of the backyard & peace in mind he will never be dumped again. Moses had a vet checkup. He is now updated on the shots, we offered to pay for his neutering & the chip we sent him to a new home with the bed that actually belonged to Azlan as he really enjoyed it, we gave them flea & tick shampoo & some food! Our hearts are absolutely joyful to the fullest as we get the updates how well he’s doing with his forever family. It turns out Johnny Boy now Moses is dog friendly & really really loves the kiddos. He now has a beautiful home, loving family, few acres of the backyard & peace in mind he will never be dumped again. Moses had a vet checkup. He is now updated on the shots, we offered to pay for his neutering & the chip we sent him to a new home with the bed that actually belonged to Azlan as he really enjoyed it, we gave them flea & tick shampoo & some food! Our hearts are absolutely joyful to the fullest as we get the updates how well he’s doing with his forever family.
