This evening, I joined staff in Office of the Prime Minister - Uganda for our twice-a-month physical exercise at the Nakasero Primary School playground. This physical exercise programme follows a Cabinet directive requiring Ministries, Departments and Agencies to conduct physical exercise sessions for their staff to combat lifestyle diseases. I commend the staff for embracing this programme and encourage them to continue. Exercise is therapy & only healthy people can do the work effectively. The roll out is scheduled to start with Government of Uganda vehicles and for this reason, today’s engagement had Transport Officers from various Gov’t MDAs. In the session, the Commissioner for Transport Regulation & Safety Winstone Katushabe reminded Gov’t drivers to exercise caution and responsibility on the road!

We had a fruitful discussion with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on road safety, tolls, levies, and construction quality. Earlier, we had given a report in the Parliament in which we highlighted many shortcomings on the part of design and construction. I'm glad to say that some of the major concerns have been addressed by NHAI. : PAC Chairman and Congress General Secretary (Org.) Shri K C Venugopal on the PAC meeting held in Parliament on public infrastructure fees and user charges.

The A1 upgrade and safety works, the Enniskillen Bypass, Lagan pedestrian bridge, the A5 and more - ALL currently PAUSED by Sinn Fein Infrastructure Minister waiting, waiting, waiting on the courts to decide. 😡 Safety CANNOT wait. Safety SHOULD not wait. The Assembly can and should amend the Climate Change legislation to address the issue and create certainly that will allow these projects to go ahead- not wait for years on the courts. The option of addressing this issue is in the hands of Liz Kimmons and the Assembly - we need to get on with it urgently, not put the future of key infrastructure in the hands of the courts.

URC in partnership with Ministry of Works & Transport and Safe Way Right Way Uganda has commenced a safety awareness campaign to educate road users on the best way to operate along Level Crossings and the railway corridor. Speaking journalists, the Benon M. Kajuna Mr. Benon Kajuna noted that, accidents involving trains across the globe are rare, but very destructive when they happen, and advised motorist and other road users to always exercise caution whenever they are driving across railway crossings. He further warned pedestrians who use the railway line as a pathway to desist from this practice because it exposes them to risks. Those who insist on using it should always ensure that they are aware of their surroundings. The same activity attracted leaders of the different transporters, associations in the country. Rail-Road safety cannot be achieved only through the physical installations. Other stakeholders (road users) should be aware of their responsibility, and that is the reason for the sensitisation drive. A few things to note 1. Always keep a distance from the railway lines at crossings by holding up behind the boom barriers. Parking in front of it is a risky undertaking. Parking below it makes its lowering impossible. This applies to both, the manual and automated barriers. 2. When stopped at any crossing, please respect the instruction. It is for your own good. 3. When approaching crossings, reduce speed. This gives you enough time to appreciate your surrounding before proceeding. 4. When a train is approaching any crossing, do not cross. Be patient. It is not as slow as you think.

I thank our international and development partners for their support of this home-grown and home-led reform process. I look forward to receiving the final report in the coming days as we continue, as one nation, unrelenting and unwavering in strengthening our democratic systems.

During my visit to Tuni, I witnessed a serious safety concern at the railway crossing. Thousands of people are forced to cross unsafe tracks every day. This is not acceptable. After discussing the issue with the Hon’ble Tuni MLA, I raised this matter in Parliament and urged the Hon’ble Railway Minister for immediate sanction of a Road Under Bridge (RUB). I will work relentlessly until this issue is resolved.
