He’s right. Elon totally can’t afford to send his own rockets to space at cost.

Hmm... "This decade"? Talking about the 2020's? Elon says 30 months. Sam says not this decade. So are we just quibbling about one year (2029)? We'll soon know.

Nobody 'fixes' a broken GPU, they just get switched out. So what you do if the GPU is broken in space, you bypass it. The next satellite adds more GPUs. He is just obfuscating, talking about math without naming any numbers.

Recent history has proven that rough math clearly isn’t Sam Altman’s strong suit.

I mean you would need some type of huge fully reusable rocket for something like that to make sense…

Profilbild von David Rejl

He's saying this, ONLY because he cannot launch those data centers himself. Elon owns the whole infrastructure. Tesla makes the solar panels + chips. XAi delivers the software and SpaceX creates the satellite and gets it to orbit, while relanding both Stages making it insanely cheap.

but we need more data centers $right

Sam Altman is the real world’s equivalent of DC Comics’ Lex Luther.

I'm glad that dickface is saying that. Will just make it more likely and faster that Elon will get it done. As a matter of fact I'm šŸ’Æ sure Elon accomplishes this.

Sam Altman: 'Orbital data centers are ridiculous this decade' Meanwhile Elon: already merging xAI + SpaceX, catching rockets for pennies on the dollar, and planning solar-powered orbital compute. History isn't kind to people who say 'impossible this decade' when talking to someone who literally reuses rockets

They literally laughed at Elon when he took the Tesla pay package deal. Saying he could never make the deadlines. But as we know now, he not only made it, he surpassed them by miles. Then they refused to pay him!!! They said reusable rockets were impossible. They said private space companies could never be profitable. So take this with a grain of salt.

Well. This decade has only 4years left. Elon will get it done in 5. Don’t bet against @elonmusk

Same guy who said it’s futile for anyone to compete with OAI. Some of us took it personally.

Profilbild von Robert A. Hahn

I didn't know, but I figured this guy was at least as smart as one of his AIs. But perhaps not. First of all, "launch costs" look different to a guy who sells space on rockets than they do to a guy who *buys* space on rockets. Worst case, Musk pays cost, not the price Altman sees. Best case, Musk puts a few data centers on each rocket that somebody else is already paying him to launch. Those get up there for free. Second, Altman doesn't appear to have a clue how much NIMBY opposition is building toward Earthbound data centers and the generating capacity they require. Even conservative estimates of the electricity required by AI in the US say we'll need to build 3 to 4 times the amount of capacity in the next five years as has been built in the last 20 years. This is not going to happen. The lawyers, the environmentalists, and the local politicians are all going to be sitting on Altman's head. A very likely scenario is that Musk has powered data centers in space -- whatever they cost -- and The Other Guys can't get enough electricity at any cost because the NIMBYs are blocking the power plants.

Of course, he’s right. We won’t see any impact this decade, and this is obviously being used by Elon to pump SpaceX’s stock for the IPO.

Putting quantum computing into space might be more of a money saver? Vacuum, subzero and whatnot. People don’t realize the problems that will be solved with quantum and only quantum

I trust @elonmusk way more than Altman. Includes both techno-insight and ETHICS. ChatGPT lost its edge when Iker left OPENAI. Grok is better for general purpose stuff. @grok do you agree or are WE biased??

Sam, there are 9,731 Starlink satellites currently in orbit. Elon can put stuff in space and make money on it. You can build an ideology AI that doesn't tell the truth. Go away.

It’s unclear to me why Sam Altman gets so much attention and credibility. I did a grok search on what businesses Sam Altman has started. The answer is not impressive. I would not be surprised to see openai get taken out by Anthropic, Google and xAI. Loopt (2005)
Co-founded at age 19 after dropping out of Stanford. It was an early location-based social networking mobile app (a precursor to modern geolocation features in apps like Snapchat or Find My Friends). The company raised over $30 million in venture capital and was acquired by Green Dot Corporation in 2012 for $43 million.

I mean... let's be totally honest. If it follows the general trajectory of Elon's stated promises of new technological innovation, it's not going to matter at scale this decade.

Elon Musk, any response?

Ƅhnliche Videos

Elon Musk is building orbital data centers. Sam Altman just called the idea ridiculous. One of them is thinking in decades. The other is thinking in quarters. Altman: ā€œI honestly think the idea with the current landscape of putting data centers in space is ridiculous.ā€ The math he’s running is real. Launch costs are brutal. Power economics favor earth. GPUs break and you can’t send a technician to orbit. Altman: ā€œIf you just do the very rough math of launch costs relative to the cost of power we can do on Earth, to say nothing of how you’re going to fix a broken GPU in space, and they do break a lot still unfortunately.ā€ He’s not wrong about today. He might be wrong about what today’s constraints tell us about tomorrow. Altman: ā€œWe are not there yet. Orbital data centers are not something it’s going to matter at scale this decade.ā€ This decade. That’s the qualifier doing all the work. Musk has never been in the business of optimizing for this decade. He’s in the business of building infrastructure everyone calls ridiculous until it becomes inevitable. They called reusable rockets ridiculous. Until Falcon 9 landed itself. And the entire economics of space changed overnight. Orbital compute has the same logic underneath it. No land constraints. No permits. No power grid politics. Unlimited solar energy. Positioned anywhere on earth within milliseconds. The launch costs that make it unviable today are the same launch costs Starship is designed to collapse by orders of magnitude. Altman is doing the math on the current landscape. Musk is building a different landscape entirely. When the person who made rockets reusable tells you space infrastructure is coming, that’s not a vision. That’s a roadmap.
