Two Brampton residents are facing multiple Criminal Code charges related to weapons trafficking following an eight-month investigation by police. In February 2025, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)-led Border Drug Interdiction Task Force (BDIT) launched an intelligence-based investigation into suspected cocaine trafficking. On Thursday, September 11, 2025, investigators identified a northbound tractor-trailer linked to the probe, which originated in Toronto. The vehicle was intercepted at a Ministry of Transportation inspection station near Temiskaming Shores. With assistance from several specialized OPP units — including the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, the Provincial Guns and Gangs Enforcement Team, North East Region Community Street Crime Units, the Canine Unit, and Temiskaming OPP — officers executed a search warrant on the truck. The search led to the seizure of 72 illegal handguns and 66 prohibited devices. Preliminary tracing by the Firearms Analysis and Tracing Enforcement (FATE) Program, managed by the Criminal Intelligence Service Ontario, revealed that all the firearms originated in the United States. Breaking news MAN ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTED BY SAPS MEMBER IN VIRAL VIDEO, PROBE UNDERWAY An investigation is underway following an incident in which a South African Police Service constable allegedly assaulted a member of the public, with a video of the incident widely circulated on social media. The incident is reported to have taken place on 02 April 2026 at the Volksrust Police Station in Mpumalanga. According to Mpumalanga SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the matter is being treated with seriousness, and an internal investigation has already been instituted to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. “In addition to the internal investigation, a criminal investigation is also underway to ensure that all aspects of the matter are addressed transparently,” Mdhluli said. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has also been notified and is expected to conduct a parallel investigation. Mdhluli said the involvement of IPID aligns with the SAPS commitment to accountability and transparency in policing. “The SAPS remains steadfast in promoting professionalism and upholding the Code of Conduct, which governs the behaviour of all members,” he said. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, has also weighed in on the matter. “The professional conduct of our members is of utmost importance, and we are committed to maintaining public trust. Honourable Members, All South Africans must be concerned at the apparent rise in gang-related killings in Cape Town and other parts of the country. Every part of society needs to work together in support of our criminal justice system to bring these killings to an end. The murder of seven young men at the Better Life informal settlement in Philippi is one of the most recent cases of this brutality. The Philippi case remains under active investigation. To date, five suspects have been apprehended in connection with the matter. The safety, protection and well-being of all residents remain a central operational priority of the South African Police Service. In response to the persistent threat of gang-related violence, the SAPS, in collaboration with the Western Cape Provincial Government and the City of Cape Town, is implementing an integrated, intelligence-led and multi-disciplinary approach. This is aimed at countering organised criminal networks and restoring stability in affected areas. As part of this broader framework, Operation Lockdown, implemented as a national intervention operation, was launched to stabilise identified high-crime precincts through the deployment of specialised national resources and tactical units. Immediate and medium-term policing interventions currently being implemented include enhanced intelligence capability. This involves strengthening intelligence collection, analysis and dissemination to proactively identify and disrupt gang operations. These interventions also include focused operational deployment. This involves targeted, intelligence-led operations, such as Operation Shanela and Project Combat, focusing on the recovery of illegal firearms, dismantling of drug distribution networks and the apprehension of wanted gang affiliates. Thr SAPS implemented Operation Lockdown II to stabilise gang-affected areas in the Western Cape through the deployment of specialised national resources, such as the National Intervention Unit, Tactical Response Team, and Public Order Policing. Operation Lockdown III has now been launched, integrating the Anti-Gang Unit and intelligence components to sustain high-impact operations across Cape Town and surrounding areas. [HIJACKING AND KIDNAPPING] Police foiled a kidnapping plot in Katlehong, resulting in the rescue of two victims and the arrest of four suspects, including a popular Vaal DJ Spitjo from Sebokeng. Preliminary report suggests that, information was received from a night-shift security officer at Eastgate Mall regarding suspicious activities involving individuals impersonating another person using her mobile phone. Acting on this intelligence, police initiated a coordinated, intelligence-driven operation which led to the arrest of three suspects at Eastgate Mall. Subsequent investigations directed the police to a safe house in Dikole Section, Katlehong. Upon arrival, an exchange of gunfire ensued. One additional suspect was apprehended at the scene, and two unlicensed firearms with live ammunition were recovered. TROOPS OF OPERATION UDOKA DISMANTLE CRIMINAL SYNDICATE, RECOVER STOLEN WEAPONS Troops of 34 Artillery Brigade, operating under Operation UDOKA through the ongoing Operation EASTERN SANITY II, have recorded a significant operational success with the arrest of key members of a notorious criminal syndicate responsible for the ambush of troops on 4 May 2026. Unfortunately, the ambush claimed the life of one soldier and left another wounded. Following the attack, troops launched a series of intelligence-led raids aimed at apprehending the perpetrators and recovering weapons stolen during the incident. These sustained operations resulted in the arrest of the suspects. Acting on actionable intelligence, in the early hours of 31 July 2026, troops in collaboration with 181 Battalion operating under 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army, conducted a coordinated raid at Opaebe and Oleh in Delta State, which led to the arrest of the suspects popularly known as Chiboy, Marathon, and Onowu, who had fled to Oleh in Delta State after the dastardly ambush on troops. Subsequently, the suspects guided troops to their hideouts at Aggah Plantation, Ekpeaggah, Rivers State, and Umudike Plantation, where the stolen weapons and other arms used in committing their nefarious acts were concealed. During the operation, troops recovered the stolen service weapons comprising one AK-47 rifle with two magazines and one FN rifle with two magazines. Additionally, troops recovered three more AK-47 rifles with nine magazines, pistols with their magazines, 194 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition, and 45 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition. Military clothing and protective gear, including camouflage shirts, trousers, jungle hats, and a fragment protection jacket, were also recovered. Other items included one empty first aid box and five mobile phones believed to be linked to the syndicate’s criminal activities. The suspects are currently in custody for further investigation and will face prosecution in accordance with the law. The Headquarters Joint Task Force South-East, Operation UDOKA, commends the professionalism, resilience, and inter-agency cooperation demonstrated by the troops throughout the operation. This success underscores the commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies to safeguarding lives and dismantling criminal networks in order to sustain the peace-building processes ongoing across the region. Following the attack, troops launched a series of intelligence-led raids aimed at apprehending the perpetrators and recovering weapons stolen during the incident. These sustained operations resulted in the arrest of the suspects. Acting on actionable intelligence, in the early hours of 31 July 2026, troops in collaboration with 181 Battalion operating under 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army, conducted a coordinated raid at Opaebe and Oleh in Delta State, which led to the arrest of the suspects popularly known as Chiboy, Marathon, and Onowu, who had fled to Oleh in Delta State after the dastardly ambush on troops. Subsequently, the suspects guided troops to their hideouts at Aggah Plantation, Ekpeaggah, Rivers State, and Umudike Plantation, where the stolen weapons and other arms used in committing their nefarious acts were concealed. During the operation, troops recovered the stolen service weapons comprising one AK-47 rifle with two magazines and one FN rifle with two magazines. Additionally, troops recovered three more AK-47 rifles with nine magazines, pistols with their magazines, 194 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition, and 45 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition. Military clothing and protective gear, including camouflage shirts, trousers, jungle hats, and a fragment protection jacket, were also recovered. Other items included one empty first aid box and five mobile phones believed to be linked to the syndicate’s criminal activities. The suspects are currently in custody for further investigation and will face prosecution in accordance with the law. The Headquarters Joint Task Force South-East, Operation UDOKA, commends the professionalism, resilience, and inter-agency cooperation demonstrated by the troops throughout the operation. According to preliminary information, the TRU officers responded to a tip-off and proceeded to recover a suspected stolen vehicle. While processing the scene, SAPS members from Bekkersdal arrived and arrested the JMPD officers. The charges brought forward appear to lack substantive basis. The officers’ service firearms, vehicles, and mobile devices were confiscated, and they were detained over the weekend. It has also been reported that JMPD Internal Affairs officials were not given information when attempting to inquire about the arrests. It is further alleged that the vehicle involved is linked to an individual associated with illegal mining operations. And it has since vanished This has raised concerns regarding the coordination and communication between SAPS and JMPD during joint operational activities.
