Sir Christopher Lee had met Tolkien in real life, and because he constantly reread The Lord of the Rings, he would often offer Peter Jackson advice on how Saruman should speak on set. During the long Orthanc speeches, he would occasionally step in and say, “Saruman wouldn’t speak like that,” helping keep the character’s tone closer to Tolkien’s vision. This makes sense, since in the books one of Saruman’s greatest powers was his voice. RIP Sir Christopher Lee 🙏

Sir Christopher Lee boycotted the premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. 😱 Christopher Lee was deeply disappointed after learning that Saruman's death scene had been removed from the theatrical cut of The Return of the King. Having portrayed one of the trilogy's main villains across the first two films, he felt it made little sense for the character to simply disappear without any explanation. As a result, audiences who only watched the theatrical version were left with no idea what happened to Saruman. Lee was so upset by the decision that he chose not to attend the film's world premiere. Fortunately, Saruman's final confrontation at Orthanc was later restored in the Extended Edition, giving the character the conclusion many fans felt he deserved.
