Beach walks are a favourite morning tradition for our Kaluku orphans. Kaikai never misses an opportunity stretch her legs and usually approaches the sandy riverbank at a sprint. However, she also never misses an opportunity to relax — upon arrival, she quickly settles into a snuggle session with Keeper Joseph! Rescued as a newborn orphan, Kaikai never knew her mum. We are her family now, and she will have a home with us until she is ready to reclaim her place in the wild — a process that may take upwards of a decade. Nursery Head Keeper Edwin calls Nyambeni a "nanny by force" – she is so eager to look after the babies that she often resorts to pushing the other nannies away. This has the opposite of her desired effect, as all her barging around can be a bit off-putting to the little ones! On this day, however, she was on her best behaviour – and it was little Daba (right) who did the barging! He was jealous of the attention that littler Zuri (left) was getting and couldn't resist a well-placed shove. Nyambeni prudently positioned herself between the toddlers and peace was restored. Every elephant seen here is an orphan. Rescued as babies, they will grow up in our care until they are ready to reclaim their place in the wild. Olorien is a quirky character. She is feisty, independent, and, unlike her peers, completely uninterested in nannying the little babies. She prefers to do her own thing. Olorien is also a quirky eater. Head Keeper Benjamin has noticed that she always scoops her food with her trunk, rather than ‘picking’ it, as most African elephants do. This morning, after playing with her breakfast for a bit and some thorough quality control, she showed off her unique technique. We rescued Olorien in 2020. At our Ithumba Reintegration Unit, she is slowly building her independence and learning the ways of the wild. When she is ready, she will reclaim her place among Tsavo’s wild elephant population. Day three of life at their new Ithumba home and Mwinzi, Toto and Natibu ended their adventures with a rainy stroll home. Guess who was leading the charge? None other than the three newbies who are settling in beautifully. Mwinzi is being his usual implacable self, Natibu is already sizing up the rest of the herd, and Toto is leaning on his Keepers as he takes it all in. When they are ready, they will reclaim their place in the wild. This graduation to Ithumba marks the next chapter in that journey, one that will continue to unfold over the coming years.
