Every country has its own amount of freedom, which is higher for some and lower for others. Some inherited it. Others fight for it. But, regardless of the country, freedom is never free. It must be protected at all times. There must be an understanding of what empowers freedom. Freedom should also be backed up by guarantees. In today’s conversation with Dutch students, I emphasised that there should never be a time when a country loses its freedom. The same is true for every person. To be free, one must comprehend what gives him or her the strength to be free.

Yet on this same date, we also remember a different morning. Four years ago, Ukraine awoke to war. It is a painful reminder that freedom does not endure on its own. It must be defended. It must be protected. Freedom means the ability to believe in the future and to live without fear. Today, Ukraine is fighting for that very right.
