Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who got the scoop on John Ternus's new gig as Apple CEO, explains why he thinks Ternus will do "a hell of a job" in his new role: "He has product sensibilities that Tim Cook simply doesn't have. He has product decision-making ability that Tim Cook certainly has, but wouldn't utilize because he himself knows that product-based decisions are not where he could have the most impact." "Just like Tim Cook really oversaw the operations part of Apple as CEO and left product development to other members of the executive team, my expectation is that John Ternus will be intimately involved with the product side of the organization as he was in his prior role to CEO. And will leave the operational side to people like Sabih Khan and Priya Balasubramaniam — the people who run the operations division at Apple." "He's going to pick his spots, and his spots are hardware and product development. There's a reason that when he chose his successor for the hardware engineering organization, he chose Tom Marieb. He's not an innovator, but he's an incredible execution guy when it comes to hardware engineering and product quality. Anthropic's Sholto Douglas says Dario Amodei's internal communication style is producing a compendium of essays in the company's Slack that will have effectively charted the history of AGI once we get there. "He has a really, really cool communication style. He quite frequently puts out very well-reasoned essays. And throughout Slack, we'll have giant essay-length debates [about them]." What's crazy is that it's a venture-style bet at growth scale. And it's a massive amount of capital for something where the consensus is: "If he solves it, it's incredibly valuable, and he leap frogs everything. And if not, maybe he just gets lost in a sea of research and never really produces anything." Also: this type of capital deployment has been happening internally at Google for a long time, but it hasn't been that big of a deal because they have the engine for it.

When travis kalanick was fundraising Uber's round that valued it at $70B, he ran four rooms simultaneously out of their New York office for an entire week, each booked in 90-minute slots across 12-hour days: "This is how we'd fundraise: we had four rooms in our New York office booked for a week with an hour-and-a-half slot on each.
