It is one of the oldest Mosques in Egypt as well as the whole of Africa surviving in its full original form, and is the largest Mosque in Cairo in terms of land area. Tulun Mosque features ancient architecture styles of Egypt, its decorations being created from carved stucco and wood. It was designed by the prominent Egyptian architect, Saiid Ibn Kateb Al-Farghany, who was an Orthodox Christian, the same engineer who designed the Nilometer. The historian al-Maqrizi lists the mosque's construction start date as 876 AD, and the mosque's original inscription slab identifies the date of completion as AH 265 (878/879). The mosque was constructed on a small hill called Gebel Yashkur, "The Hill of Thanksgiving." One local legend says that it is here that Noah's Ark came to rest after the Deluge, rather than at Mount Ararat.

When I was on the JRE, Joe asked me about the epic of Gilgamesh and the Noah’s Ark story. Are there parallels? Yes! But those parallels are less one copying from the other and more emblematic of the reality of a story (the biblical one I would contend being the authentic narrative) having a cultural rememberance within the parallel groups of the Ancient Near East. The fact that multiple ancient cultures have their own similar although not exact great flood stories indicates that something probably did take place. The cataclysm is their heritage and so they remember said heritage by including it in their oral and written traditions. Acknowledging the similarities (while also pointing out the differences) isn’t a threat to the authenticity is the biblical story, it’s actually an asset to its reliability!

"If Washington actually goes and tries to do, not a regime change but a regime evolution from within the political elite, the political elite have cut their teeth on these exact same issues that Ali Khamenei has. ... That makes them anti-American and anti-Israeli."
