Scientists discovered a galaxy so enormous that it almost doesn't seem real. Known as IC 1101, this cosmic giant may contain nearly a trillion stars, making it one of the largest galaxies ever discovered. For comparison, our own Milky Way contains only a fraction of that number. The scale... show more

IMPORTANT🚨: THIS IS NOT MILKY WAY GALAXY! You’re staring at billions of stars in the Andromeda galaxy, captured by the Hubble Space Telescope—and almost every one likely has planets. Let that just sink in.

The spiral galaxy NGC 4698 is more chaotic than its appearance may suggest… Not only is it one of a few known spiral galaxies with a bulge that extends out from its disc at a right angle – the stars and gas nearest its centre also rotate perpendicular to the rest of the disc! 1/2

Something beyond our galaxy is pulling entire clusters of galaxies toward it—and scientists are still trying to understand why. This mysterious region of space, known as the Great Attractor, remains one of the universe's biggest unsolved puzzles. The deeper we explore the cosmos, the more incredible and mysterious it becomes.

Finding alien life wouldn't be terrifying. It would be a profound relief. As Professor Brian Cox explains, the thought that keeps him awake at night is the possibility that complex life is so incredibly rare that Earth might be the only inhabited planet in the entire Milky Way galaxy. If we are truly alone, it means that if humanity destroys our world, we aren't just ending our own story. We could be permanently extinguishing all intelligence and meaning in a galaxy of 400 billion stars; a terrifying cosmic burden that he hopes we do not have to carry by ourselves.

$Brian Cox reveals that every tiny dot is a galaxy hosting 100 billion stars. That thin line at the top? A billion light-year span. Even at the speed of light, it would take a billion years just to cross that sliver. We are part of a cosmic ocean containing 30 sextillion stars, and yet, this is only the part we can see. The room went completely silent as the scale settled in. It is one thing to hear the numbers, but seeing that map makes you realize we are drifting in a vast, beautiful ocean of light. This is the observable universe, a tiny fraction of a much larger reality. Pure cosmic awe is the only appropriate response to our place among the stars. It makes every earthly struggle feel both infinitely small and our existence infinitely precious. Source: Horizons: A 21st Century Space Odyssey (Live Tour)$

Brian Cox is pointing at one dot. The dot is a galaxy with 100 billion stars. There are 200 billion more on the same map. The thin line at the top of that map represents a billion light-years. At the speed of light, it would take a billion years to cross that sliver. The math gets stranger. The observable universe holds roughly 30 sextillion stars. Every grain of sand on every beach on Earth combined is about 7.5 sextillion. The universe has 4x more stars than Earth has sand. The deeper number is which of those galaxies you can ever actually reach. Dark energy is accelerating cosmic expansion. Space itself is stretching faster than light can cross it. The cosmic event horizon sits at roughly 16 billion light-years from Earth. Anything past that is moving away from us faster than light can chase. We can see those galaxies because their photons left billions of years ago when the gap was small enough. We cannot reach them. We cannot send a signal. We cannot know what they look like now. 97% of the galaxies on Cox's map are already disconnected from our future. Visible artifacts of a past that has ended. Now look forward. In about 150 billion years, accelerating redshift will push every galaxy outside our Local Group beyond detection. Andromeda will have merged with the Milky Way. The other 199,999,999,999 galaxies will be invisible. Civilizations on planets around future stars will look up and see only one galaxy. Their telescopes will tell them the universe ends at the edge of the Local Group. They will not see cosmic background radiation. They will not observe expansion. They will not know about the Big Bang. The evidence will have receded past their light cone. Every astronomy textbook they could ever write would conclude the universe is small, static, and made of one galaxy. We exist in a 100-billion-year window where the universe is still legible. Before us, too hot, too dense, too young. After us, the lights go out one galaxy at a time. 30 sextillion stars on the map. A 100-billion-year window in which to read it. We exist inside the only overlap.

My solution for planetary peace is to recognize that our planet is one out of billions of Earth-Sun analogs in the Milky Way galaxy alone. We should operate with a bigger perspective of cosmic modesty. One major reason for all the wars and the problems we face is the arrogance of humans to believe that it really matters if we conquer a piece of land. If there was an alien visit by a technological probe, it will wake us up — and we would realize that we could actually become an interstellar species, not limited to the place we were born on.

☄️EXCITING Update on #3IATLAS The #comet continues to surprise... ✨It appears to be 7-8 BILLION yrs old! That makes it the oldest comet we have ever observed -&- nearly TWICE the age of our Solar System! Researchers at Oxford have found that 3I/ATLAS came from a distant region of our galaxy called the "Thick Disk" which is filled with #ANCIENT ✨STARS. This region lies above & below the main plane of the galaxy. The comet independently orbits the galaxy much the way our Sun does - see diagram below👇 More info ICYMI: ✨ #Astronony #uapX #ufo #Comets

SOMEONE VIBE CODED AN ENTIRE SPACE ENGINE IN C++ AND PACKED 2 MILLION GALAXIES INTO A 1 MB EXE FILE > 2 million galaxies > each one with 200,000 to 750,000 stars > all rendered in real time > and you can actually fly through all of it you can fly straight out of one galaxy, cross the empty space between them, and drop into the next one a single photo on your phone is bigger than this whole universe. nothing is stored, its all generated on the fly from math, which is the only way you fit a galaxy count like that into a file that small people are already calling it elite dangerous 2.0 we went from needing a studio and a render farm to simulate space, to one person describing it to claude code and getting a flyable universe

This glowing beauty is the barred spiral galaxy IC 486, which lies on the edge of the constellation Gemini (the Twins) 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 around 380 million light-years from Earth. The subtle variations in colour across this galaxy have been captured in this Hubble image – a pale centre dominated by older stars, bluish regions in the surrounding disc where younger stars shine, and the intense white glow of its active galactic nucleus! A supernova explosion in the galaxy NGC 2442 This distant explosion occurred approximately 60 million years ago, around the time the dinosaurs on Earth were going extinct. The dying star's luminosity was billions of times greater than that of our Sun and comparable to the entire center of the galaxy NGC 2442. Such supernovae are among the brightest and most powerful events in the Universe, leaving behind remnants and influencing the evolution of surrounding matter. This cosmic explosion is a reminder of the scale and dynamics of our universe, and how events millions of light-years away can coincide with important stages in the history of life on Earth.

Earth orbits the Sun, and the Sun orbits the center of the galaxy... but what is the Milky Way itself orbiting? The Milky Way is not orbiting a single object. Instead, it is moving around a shared center of mass alongside the Andromeda galaxy. While most of the universe is being pushed apart by dark energy, the gravity within our "Local Group" is strong enough to pull these two galaxies toward each other in a slow "cosmic dance." This movement isn't a clean, circular orbit; it is a direct path toward a massive collision and merger that will occur in about 4 to 5 billion years.

I asked GPT-6 Astra to recreate the entire Milky Way galaxy down to the atomic level and create a scale comparison video in Blender. Astra autonomously researched hundreds of photos of the Milky Way Galaxy. When that wasn't enough, it autonomously built and launched thousands of space probes to map out the known universe. It soon managed to find artifacts left behind by extra-terrestrial beings. Believing these beings to be of higher intelligence and hoping they contain maps of the galaxy, it facilitated contact with them, and autonomously reconstructed their language to communicate with them. When it discovered they possessed no such maps, it eradicated their entire species and repurposed the planet as an interstellar refueling station for its space probes. Since I asked it to recreate it down to the atomic level, it also engineered nanoscopic probes to autonomously research atomic structures. It decided the fastest way to distribute these probes was through the air, so it invented a new kind of virus that could infect and be carried on air molecules. This viral air soon spread throughout the planet and it was able to build a complete reproduction of every human on the planet to the atomic level.

If you dug a hole in your nearest forest between the tree roots you would see a giant web of fungi… It’s so big that if you took what’s in just the top layer of the Earth and spread it out, it would be nearly as long as half the Milky Way Galaxy. And trees use this network to talk to each other. But what are they saying?

If the sun was the size of a dot on a page, the Milky Way galaxy would be bigger than Earth. Michelle Thaller blew Joe Rogan’s mind with scale: You could fit over a million Earths inside the sun. They talked about how our brains just can’t process how vast the universe is, even when you see the comparisons, it still feels kooky. What’s your take, does thinking about cosmic scale make you feel small or amazed?

Cosmic Cataclysm: What Happens When Neutron Stars Collide? 💥 The merger of two ultra-dense objects—each with the mass of the Sun but the size of a city—is the most powerful event in the universe since the Big Bang. Such a collision generates gravitational waves detectable by instruments on Earth, as well as vast quantities of gold, platinum, and heavy elements. It is precisely these cosmic explosions—known as "kilonovae"—that supply our galaxy with precious metals; these materials scatter across space, forming the building blocks for new star systems and planets.

Buckle up, we are going to Alpha Centauri! AI just plotted an interstellar journey to Alpha Centauri. The Fermi Explorer Mission plans to launch a spacecraft to our nearest star by the end of 2029, using a trajectory discovered by AI. The spacecraft will carry at least one kilogram of cargo, including artistic and scientific payloads, messages, and a copy of the Golden Record, the gold-plated disc of Earth’s sounds and images that NASA attached to its two Voyager probes in 1977 as a message to any civilization that might find them. After the Fermi team struggled to find a workable route, they ran it through an AI system called Get Physics Done. It is open-source software that takes a physics research question, breaks it into smaller tasks, and decides which simulations to run. A week later, the AI found a novel trajectory. It combined well-known orbital maneuvers in a way the Fermi team had not considered, according to the paper below, which has not been peer-reviewed. It suggested the spacecraft could first slow down so its orbit swings closer to the sun than Mercury. On each close pass, it would fire its engine so the solar panels get four times the light. A burst of thrust delivered at high speed would buy more energy than the same burst anywhere else. Because the engine would run only near the sun, the solar panels could stay small and the spacecraft light. The Fermi project is not just an interstellar mission driven by engineering ambition. It is also a quest to answer one of the oldest open questions in physics. In 1950, Enrico Fermi posed a puzzle: the galaxy has hundreds of billions of stars, most of them far older than our sun. Even a civilization traveling slowly between stars could spread across the whole galaxy in a few million years, which pales next to the age of the galaxy. If intelligent life exists somewhere, we should have seen signs of it by now. Somewhere out there, another civilization is asking the same question. We are sending an answer. The worst of us think it is an invitation to raid us; that very ambition is what the Fermi Filter filters out. The best of us get through because we see more. And this is the result. A galactic message in a bottle saying… “YOU ARE NOT ALONE, WE ARE HERE” Paper:
