Culture is genetic because behavior is genetic. This beaver never saw a dam in its life. No beavers or anything else ever taught it to build a dam. It wants to build a dam because it is a beaver. Many beavers together build a big dam. That is beaver culture. Humans are not different. Nothing is different. This is what life is. This is how life works. Your body is your mind. A caterpillar wants to build a chrysalis. A bee wants to build a hive. A lion wants to build a pride. You are not special. You are not above your nature. you are INSIDE of it. The thoughts that we think are genetic thoughts. The crimes we commit are genetic crimes. The art we create is genetic art. Just like this beaver, you can give the animal different sticks and it will build a different dam, but it will always build a dam. And you can give humans different "education," but the human will always use it to do what its genes tell it to do. This is the first big answer that you need. This is the biggest piece of the puzzle. This is how to understand people 90% of the way. You just... notice what they do, and get out of the way, and watch them do it. And if they need sticks, you give them sticks. And if you don't like what they do, you have to get away from them. You cannot train dam-building into them or out of them any more than you can with a beaver. A beaver wants to build a dam because it is a beaver. Whatever you see people build, that's what they wanted to build from the sticks they got in the river they were in. Stop pretending you can change it.

AN ENGINEERING PROJECT 23 CENTURIES OLD In 256 BC, King Zhao of Qin asked engineers to create a water channel to solve the problem of regular flooding on the Min River in Sichuan. Their solution was so good that it is STILL in use today, 23 centuries later. The project is on the World Heritage List. How did they do it? In those days, people tried to flight destructive, deadly floods by building dams. But the chief engineer of King Zhao realized that water from the river, a major tributary of the mighty Yangtze River, was too powerful to block—and besides, they wanted to retain the river, so that boats could still use it. Instead, chief hydrologist Li Bing created bamboo baskets of stones which were used to create a levee, to divert some of the flow. And then he had to somehow cut through a stone mountain to create a new route. Li developed a technique of using fire and water to rapidly heat and cool rocks, which eventually cracked, allowing engineers to remove them. The water was diverted to a dry area—which then blossomed. The system is still used today, and irrigates more than 5,300 sq km (2,000 sq mi) of land.

Just read a neat AI paper called SAMURAI -- it takes SAM 2 (Meta's "segment anything" model) and makes it way better at tracking objects in videos. Basic problem is SAM 2 gets confused when things move fast or there's a crowd of similar objects (big problem for VFX and video intelligence alike). The fix? They basically gave it a sense of motion and smarter memory selection using our old friend the Kalman filter -- helps it remember where things were going instead of just where they are. No retraining needed and runs in realtime. Elegant solution that matches (and even beats!) a lot of purpose built tracking systems. Nice example of how sometimes you don't need fancy new architectures -- just smart ways to use what the model already knows, plus some tried & tested classical methods. Every time someone's like "we solved tracking!" I check the methods section and... yep, there's our boy Kalman, still crushing it after all these years. Sometimes the old school stuff just works.

Broadcom's CEO just told investors that one senior engineer with Claude Opus can do in one week what ten engineers earning $300,000 a year take three months to produce. Every engineering org in the world is running the wrong headcount math. This was not a prediction. It was a report from inside Broadcom. Hock Tan said his engineers are already using Claude Opus for engineering design and code assistance. Not experimenting with it. Using it. And the output they are getting from a single senior engineer in one week is equivalent to what a team of ten would produce over three months. Do that math slowly. Ten engineers at $300,000 a year is $3 million in annual salary. Three months of their time is $750,000 of labor. One engineer with Claude Opus produces the same result in one week. He also said something that most people in the room let slide past them. The engineers who get good at these tools do not just get faster. They get better. The designs they produce with AI assistance are probably better than what they would produce without it. That is the part nobody wants to say out loud. It was never just about speed. The ceiling on what a single engineer can produce just moved. They asked the Russian authorities to turn to China with a request to finance the construction of a school. Today, I taught my primary 2 students how to make a PPT using iPads. Giving presentations and using smart devices are now common in professional work places and it’s important that start giving my kids those skill sets at a young age. It will build their work ethic, confidence, realistic expectations in life and navigate them to seamlessly fit into any professional environment they find themselves in now and the future. An important teaching approach I use here is to show them less of how to do it, and just throw them into the situation to see how they can find their ways and create solutions. Only when they need help is when we show them how to do it. It makes them used to problem solving, resilience, less likely to be lazy and dependent. They themselves will be strong to initiate tackling an unknown problem and develop confidence and humility in asking for help or knowledge when they need it. Nigeria needs proper budget allocation for education and modern/designed curriculums that are useful to students and the country in the future. Vote for leaders who will enthusiastically execute these policies. If they don’t, impeach them and take any necessary action against them because they are not only destroying your economic future, but your children’s future as well. This is my idea. A for Almajiri Education is the foundation of any functioning economy, and Nigerians are some of the most intelligent people in other countries but with most out of school children on planet earth. As a basic human right, it is the responsibility of the whole society to not only advocate for modern curriculums that have practical and realistic value in sustaining the economy of that society in the future, but to hold their leaders accountable when they don’t invest the appropriate resources and relevance into education. This is the reason why Almajiri still exists today in 21st century, while religious education and modern education can be attained together using curriculums that are realistic and set a foundation for the future of the students and their society.
