US–GHANA POWER COMPACT I promised to work with Akufo-Addo but ECG was bleeding under him and I was disappointed. — Virginia Palmer, US Ambassador to Ghana reveals why they cancelled the Compact. Ghana was due for a second tranche of $190m under the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) which started under President Mahama in 2014. The US-GH CC was designed to revamp the country’s energy sector through strategic investments in power infrastructure, promoting energy efficiency, and fostering inclusive economic growth. MCC aimed to improve Ghana’s power sector and support economic growth. It involved a $316 million investment focused on modernizing utility operations, upgrading infrastructure, and reducing technical and commercial losses, ultimately aiming to improve reliability and affordability of electricity. The compact was a key part of a larger effort to address Ghana’s power sector challenges and promote sustainable economic growth. It was cancelled in 2019 with no immediate plan to reengage on the back of the PDS botched contract.

In his final address to the nation in 2024, President Aliyev highlighted Azerbaijan’s economic achievements: “This year, our GDP has grown by more than 4%, the non-oil sector by more than 6%, and the non-oil industry by more than 7%. We have increased our foreign currency reserves, which now exceed $72 billion. At the same time, we have reduced our foreign debt, which currently stands at just over $5.2 billion. In other words, our foreign currency reserves are 14 times greater than our foreign debt. If any developed country has such indicators, let them show me.”

Nigeria has inaugurated Africa’s largest lithium processing plant in Nasarawa State, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to deepen economic diversification and strengthen its position in the global clean energy value chain. This is Chahwanda Stadium where HardRock Football Club hosted Scottland FC, a match that ended in a 0-0 draw. The stadium was filled to the brim, more than 10 000 people attended this debut match. This is a cause for celebration as this marks the tremendous resuscitation of the football sector and the revival of sports tourism. With the current sports tourism boom, Zimbabwe is headed for economic growth and development through generation of more revenue from gate takings, job creation especially in the hospitality sector and the promotion of national identity. With these initiatives in place, President President of Zimbabwe ‘s vision of establishing an upper middle income economy by 2030 is set to become a reality in the next 4 years. #EDHuchii #ED2030
