Ghana was due for a second tranche of $190m under the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) which started under President Mahama in 2014. The US-GH CC was designed to revamp the country’s energy sector through strategic investments in power infrastructure, promoting energy efficiency, and fostering inclusive economic growth. MCC aimed to improve Ghana’s power sector and support economic growth. It involved a $316 million investment focused on modernizing utility operations, upgrading infrastructure, and reducing technical and commercial losses, ultimately aiming to improve reliability and affordability of electricity. The compact was a key part of a larger effort to address Ghana’s power sector challenges and promote sustainable economic growth. It was cancelled in 2019 with no immediate plan to reengage on the back of the PDS botched contract.
