A blacktip reef shark goes after a coral trout being held by a person, misjudges the strike, and ends up way too close to a human for comfort. Kid walked away with barely a scratch, but that’s luck, not skill. These sharks are lightning fast and locked onto whatever fish is struggling nearby, so if you’re holding a catch anywhere near the water, you’re basically ringing the dinner bell. Not a deliberate attack, just an animal doing what it does, and a person who happened to be in the wrong spot at the wrong time. The ocean doesn’t care how experienced you think you are. Would this change how you fish or swim near reefs?

We often use the term egocentric to describe adults who behave selfishly, deliberately putting their own needs and desires above those of others. When we speak of egocentrism through the lens of child development, we aren’t describing a character flaw, but rather an inability to understand the world from the perspective of others. Check out this little guy, who’s arrived to pay a visit to his cousin. He knocks on the door, but when a voice from the other side of the door asks “who is it” he answers in true toddler fashion: ME. It’s a lovely example of egocentrism in action. Not yet capable of putting himself in the shoes of the interrogator, our hero fails to recognize that everyone is “me” to themselves and that the answer - while accurate from his perspective - actually fails to provide the information being sought. Responding with his name would have been a more mature response, but it’s one that doesn’t yet occur to him at this tender age. Perspective taking is a skill that develops over time, not emerging with sophistication in many children until 4 or 5 years of age. It is the skill set that underlies the development of empathy. The developmental egocentrism of infants and toddlers is particularly important for parents to keep in mind. Was very impressed on Friday by East Carolina RHP Trey Yesavage, who allowed just 1 ER and struck out 11 across 6 IP. FB sat 93-96, topped out at 97. Jumped out of the hand from his near over-the-top slot. Plenty of carry through the zone, shape of the pitch is outstanding. Control and command of it were both impressive, threw it for strikes 73% of the time. 55, borderline 60 pitch. Mixed in two distinct breaking balls with a high-70s CB and mid-80s SL. It's clear on Friday he didn't have the best feel for his CB. Threw a couple good ones that flashed plenty of depth, but it lacked its usual sharp, downward bite. Will typically flash plus. Gyro SL was a lot better. Threw it with conviction, confidence in the pitch was there. Flashed late teeth with some depth, generated 7 whiffs. Would give it a 55. I was most impressed with his SPL-CH. Got nice separation off his heater with a 10+ MPH difference. Threw it to both LHH and RHH. Flashed ultra-late tumbling life; seemingly fell off a table ~1-2 feet in front of the plate. Kills spin really well. Maintained arm speed. Looked like a plus pitch. Yesavage this year has a 1.80 ERA with 19 Ks to just 3 BB across 10 IP. He is one of the premier college arms in this year's draft class and has first round upside. (📽️: ACC Network)

Today, I received a call I will not forget. I had just woken up after studying through the night. As I prepared to pray, my phone kept ringing. I ignored it at first, but it persisted. INF Gavin Kilen (Tennessee Baseball) will be a key piece within a loaded Tennessee lineup this season. Earned the starting 2B job as a Freshman and contributed, but broke out last spring to the tune of a .330/.361/.591 slash line with 23 2B, 3 3B, 9 HR and 41 RBIs. Kilen is slightly undersized and has an average build at 5'11 and 180-lbs. Some room to fill out and add ~10 pounds or so. Relaxed, slightly crouched stance in the box with a medium high handset. Minimal load in which his hands drift slightly, leg lift leads into a small stride. Short, compact swing and takes a direct path to contact. Above-average hand speed, it's an operation that's tailored towards spraying line drives all over the yard. Kilen is a hit-over-power profile with an aggressive approach in the box. He has plus bat-to-ball skills and his feel for the barrel is evident. Last spring, Kilen worked a 93% IZ contact rate, including 95% against FB. His aggressive approach and somewhat free-swinger mentality does lead to some chase up against FB and secondaries down, but it hasn't been a hindrance to his production. Kilen pounces on pitches in the zone and steps in the box ready to hit. Would give his hit tool a 55. It's more gap power than it is over the fence power for Kilen, but he did tap into some more impact last season. Part of that is due to getting the ball up in the air more: between '23 and '24 he increased his FB+LD% from 44% to 51%. It will always play as slightly below average (fringy), but he did post a Max EV of 108.5 during the spring and 101.4 this summer. Kilen's HR impact and highest quality of contact comes to the pull side. Vast majority of his XBH power comes on pitches in the bottom-half of the zone, which makes sense given his bat path. Has shown the ability to work from gap-to-gap. Kilen was Louisville's every day SS last spring, but he'll slide over to 2B this season for Tennessee. I actually think that's where he profiles best defensively as a professional, where he has an average arm with some range. After seeing him at SS for a couple of summers, his actions and clock translate better at 2B. Kilen is a day 1 type this July with top-55 overall upside.

Three casinos, one boardwalk, and a financial philosophy that can be summarised as follows: borrow enormous sums at ruinous interest rates, collect a fat salary, and let someone else hold the bag when the whole thing goes sideways. He refined this technique over twenty-five years and four bankruptcies. It is, in retrospect, less a cautionary tale and more a dry run. Trump arrived in Atlantic City in the early 1980s with gold letters, junk bonds, and absolute certainty that he was about to reinvent American gambling. He ended up doing something rather different. His first casino was Trump Plaza, opened in 1984. Then came Trump’s Castle. Then the centrepiece: the Trump Taj Mahal, whose $1 billion construction was financed by junk bonds at an interest rate of 14 percent. Trump called it the eighth wonder of the world. 68 college students played video games an hour a day for 30 weeks. They got measurably smarter. EEG brain scans confirmed it. The setup was simple. Half the group played League of Legends, an action game. The other half played Legends of the Three Kingdoms, a strategy card game. Same hours, same schedule, no gaming experience for anyone going in. Both groups improved on attention, working memory, and executive function. The League group's gains were significantly larger in spatial attention and spatial working memory. The benefits were still measurable 10 weeks after the gaming stopped. None of this is new. Daphne Bavelier's lab at the University of Geneva has been replicating this finding since the early 2000s. Her 2018 meta-analysis in Psychological Bulletin pulled data from 8,970 participants across 15 years and found the same thing. Action games train attentional control, a brain skill that transfers to other tasks. Strategy games train deliberation, which mostly stays inside the strategy game. The mechanism is the counterintuitive part. Action games train your brain by giving you no time to think. The brain can't deliberate. League of Legends throws 9 champions, hundreds of minions, dozens of abilities, mana, cooldowns, and map state at you, all updating in milliseconds. The brain learns to perceive faster instead. That perceptual speed transfers to anything else that demands the same skill. Including surgery. The 2007 Rosser study in Archives of Surgery found that laparoscopic surgeons who played video games more than 3 hours a week made 37% fewer errors, completed procedures 27% faster, and scored 42% higher on overall performance. The top third of gamers made 47% fewer errors. Laparoscopic surgery is a 2D screen with distorted depth perception, remote-controlled instruments, and multiple data streams updating in real time. The cognitive profile is almost identical to an action video game. The 10-week persistence is the part that should change how this gets discussed. If the gains were just from practicing the game, they would have disappeared the moment the students stopped playing. They didn't. The 30 weeks rewired the perceptual system, and the rewiring stayed.

I know I can still make a lot of $ investing in companies led by people like Mark Zuckerberg or Sam Altman, but they are shady and I just can’t trust them. And that’s why the founder matters so much to me when I invest. I’m betting on so much more than just the products, technology, or financials, although important. I’m betting on the person leading the company… their vision, character, ability to execute, willingness to risk everything, and most importantly, their heart. And the heart matters. I genuinely believe Elon has a kind heart and that his intentions are real. He’s shown me time and time again that this is about so much more than just making $ money (despite him NEVER letting investors down for any capital raise for any of his companies in the long run…) You don’t risk everything you have on electric cars, FSD, and reusable rockets bc you’re chasing the easiest $ dollar. In fact, looking back, there were probably a thousand easier ways to make $ money with far less risk, stress, and sacrifice. You dedicate your life to solving some of humanity’s hardest problems bc something deeper than $ money is driving you. Elon could’ve easily taken his $ money, disappeared, and lived one of the easiest lives imaginable. But instead, he kept putting it back on the line to build things people said were impossible and were super important for the future. Making life multiplanetary. Accelerating sustainable energy. Giving people internet anywhere on Earth. Restoring mobility and independence through robotics. Pushing humanity forward with AI. The list goes on and on… You can disagree with Elon. You can hate how he says things. He says crazy things, I know. You can question his decisions. But after following him and investing in his companies for more than a decade, I believe he’s the real deal… the mission is real. I believe I have a pretty keen eye for these things. Great entrepreneurs can copy ideas, improve them, and still make investors a lot of $ money. However, true innovators create the future everyone else eventually follows. That’s the difference. And to me, there’s only one Elon Musk.
