SENATOR Reverend Raphael Warnock: “The same tools used during Jim Crow, packing and cracking Black voting districts, are back, and now the Court said that’s fine… This is an effort by politicians to choose who their voters are instead of having voters choose their politicians.”

Today I voted no on a package of bills attempting to bring back partisan gerrymandering in California. For over 200 years, elected leaders used partisan gerrymandering to choose their preferred voters, protect their own political interests, and avoid accountability. That’s why politicians, regardless of state or party, cannot be trusted to draw their own maps. Then in 2008, Californians chose a better path forward. A system where politicians no longer choose their voters, but one where the voters get to choose their politicians. The independent Citizens Redistricting Commission became a model for the nation, and remains a model that should be adopted nationwide to end partisan gerrymandering once and for all. Unfortunately, our state took a step backwards today when the Governor and Supermajority approved a package of bills to suspend the existing maps drawn by the independent Citizens Redistricting Commission and replace them with a new set of maps drawn by Sacramento politicians. The actions taken this week by the Legislature undermine the will of the people and tarnish California’s legacy as a leader in drawing independent maps. A recent Politico poll found that 64% of Californians oppose this veiled attempt to return power to the politicians. I urged my colleagues on the Assembly Floor to reject this race to the bottom. The good news is, voters will have the final say and the ability to reject this partisan scheme at the ballot box in November.
