Severe thunderstorms quickly advanced across the Northern U.S. Plains over a six-hour period from June 7 to June 8—the days leading up to this #TimeLapseTuesday. The Geostationary Lightning Mapper aboard NOAA’s #GOESEast (#GOES19) 🛰️ gives us an idea of just how much lightning the Plains saw during these storms.

Extreme heat from the #BabylonFire and other wildfires across Utah and Colorado led to the formation of pyrocumulonimbus clouds earlier this week. These clouds were captured by NOAA’s #GOESWest (#GOES18) 🛰️ over an eight-hour period on July 6. The Babylon Fire has burned over 100,000 acres and is 11% contained.

Severe thunderstorms have started to develop over parts of north #Rajasthan now. Video from Rawatsar in Hanumangarh district with #hailstorm in the evening. Scattered thunderstorms, hails expected in more districts of N RJ, #Haryana up to #Delhi NCR during night - early morning hours. #Punjab to experience storms during mid night into morning hours tomorrow. On 4th may - tomorrow evening: Fresh intense thunderstorms will develop in plains of north west india which will bring strong winds (50-100km/h), rains and even hails. Will update latest basis development of thundercells and steering.

Australia: A firefighter sent in the view of what they were dealing with when the Grampians National Park Fire ripped across Victoria, Australia. Multiple fires merged after days of suppression efforts leading to 326,000+ acres burning. These fires started after a storm system brought widespread dry lightning across the region. Thanks to the subscriber who shared this footage of the fire jumping a control road during their fight.

From International Space Station, we have a unique vantage point to observe lightning storms from directly above them. Much like from the ground, they appear as rapid, intense flashes that are over as quickly as they started. But, with the help of handheld cameras and a bit of practice (and, admittedly, some luck), we can capture these intense flashes with a very high frame rate then slow them down to see how the lightning propagates. It's lightning, in slow motion. This is one that occurred over Indonesia on 6/28. I shot it for a half second at 1/120 frame rate, so, 60 separate frames. I then compiled those frames into two videos: the first, in real-time, and the second, slowed down so that each frame is a half second to highlight the progression of the flash. Note the incredible burst of light in one frame, which includes what is likely a TLE on the upper left. A TLE, or Transient Luminous Event, is an electrical discharge that happens in the upper atmosphere above lightning storms (if you haven’t seen Ferry Farhan TLE photo from last week, head over to her page). As their name implies, these are transient, or short lived, phenomena – it appeared in only one frame of the sequence, lasting for no more than 1/120th of a second. The last photo is that single frame. Absolutely incredible.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day feature the most impressive severe thunderstorm setup I’ve seen along the California coastline in at least a decade. The first round of isolated severe thunderstorms will come ashore tonight, bringing the threat of a isolated tornado and severe wind gusts over 60 mph from the Central Coast up to Humboldt County. The severe weather threat then expands into the Central Valley during the afternoon, California’s tornado alley, with the potential for isolated tornadoes, damaging winds, and even large hail. The threat then shifts south into Southern California tomorrow, where isolated severe wind gusts and a brief tornado will be possible. However, Christmas Eve into Christmas morning features the most potent severe weather environment of the week and could lead to a severe thunderstorm outbreak along the coastline from the Central Coast up to the North Coast. The combination of strong low-level and deep-layer shear with sufficient instability is rarely seen in this part of the world. I seriously cannot recall seeing Significant Tornado Parameter (STP) values exceed 3 along the California coastline. The peak threat window appears to be from 10 PM Thursday to 8 AM Friday. It would not be out of the question to see a Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued Christmas Eve night with the potential for a couple tornadoes and scattered severe wind gusts. I also believe this may be the first time on record that San Francisco has been placed under a Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms in the Day 1–3 NWS Storm Prediction Center Convective Outlooks.
