A case has been registered against Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Sukrya Mhatre, and five others, who assaulted two doctors at the hospital after a family was advised to shift a newborn to another facility. Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) threatened to shut clinics and hospitals in the area if immediate action was not taken.

They determined that the patient—an infant—might require an NICU bed, a facility not available at that hospital. Consequently, they requested a transfer, explaining to the family that the baby needed to be moved to another facility. The family said they would call their 'Dada'. None of the on-duty doctors or staff knew who this 'Dada' was. The patient's relatives then called someone in. Ramesh Mhatre and his associates arrived with a large mob. They barged in, immediately started hurling abuse, and began assaulting the doctors... Who would want to work in such an environment? My daughter handled the situation very bravely, but she is reluctant to return here now. She would prefer to stay away from this kind of atmosphere; she hasn't slept for two or three nights. These people work 48-hour shifts—she was on duty from Sunday morning at 8:00 AM (when the incident occurred) right through to Wednesday morning. It is frightening for doctors; no one would appreciate such a situation. We are currently living in an atmosphere of fear."

The politician involved is an elected representative from the Shiv Sena who assaulted a female doctor as well as other healthcare workers, nurses, and paramedics. He was accompanied by several goons; the entire incident was caught on camera... Under these circumstances, it is imperative that immediate action be taken against this corporator for his actions. It is the responsibility of the Maharashtra government to ensure that the police do not succumb to any pressure... The FAIMA has written to Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, demanding action against him within 24 hours..." He also says, "Many medical colleges and hospitals are opening in India these days, creating the impression that our medical infrastructure is improving significantly; however, the reality is quite different... There are significant technological shortcomings—deficiencies that have been overlooked... While violence against doctors is generally not a major concern in other countries, it has become a serious issue in India. Incidents of abuse against both male and female doctors occur almost daily..." He further says, "If no satisfactory action is taken within 24 hours, we stand with the doctors of Maharashtra. They have already called for a strike; OPD services there are suspended, and we are fully prepared to stage a nationwide protest in their support—and we will do so."

At KSB Olympia Dream Children’s Hospital, a doctor was brutally slapped 12 times in a row and abused by a patient’s relative. According to the reports his only fault was that he advised the critically ill child to be shifted to another hospital with ICU facilities since their hospital did not have one. Cases like these once again highlight the unsafe working conditions for doctors where even giving the right medical advice can put their lives at risk.
