The Flex2 is an upgraded version built on the Flex1: v1 featured 25 DOF and used a cable-driven system; the v2 introduces direct drive, which reduces the DOF to 23 but also sheds 400g in weight. It seems a hybrid drive mechanism may be the more practical solution. New robot hands just dropped! But it seems to be missing a couple fingers. Tacta Systems Tacta Systems is a Palo Alto robotics startup that just came out of stealth, and raised with $75M and a dexterity platform, TactaBot, aimed at high-value manufacturing. TactaBot has three parts: - the Tacta Hand -> a human-scale robotic hand with 15 independently actuated joints, proprietary "Fluidic Tendon" actuation, pitched as reliable for millions of factory cycles. - the Tacta Sensor -> a tiny tactile sensor reading force from 250 Pa to 700,000 Pa, sampling at 400 Hz, resolving temperature to 0.1 °C. - Skill Capture -> a data system built around the Tacta Glove. It contains the same sensor embedded in a glove that factory workers wear. Sounds similar to what mimic is doing! Except with 3 fingers instead of 5. Tacta's vision sees 3 fingers as more than enough to complete all tasks, and less complex to simulate than 5. My opinion: Tacta is very strong at semiconductor/MEMS, their moat lies in their ability to manufacture their touch sensor as large as a grain of sand, not the hand or the model. One caveat though: there is no detail nor explanation of how the 5 finger data acquisition glove maps to the 3 finger hand -> I would love to learn more about it! This is where the interesting part of the tech is imho. If this does not work, then nothing does. Still, I have to admit it looks very cool, slick, and minimal, I love it:

But my robot is parked at the local high school twice a day. Its cameras see humans in all of our weirdness. How we move. Where we go. Where we walk. Who we talk with. What you are wearing. Whether your hair was combed this morning. That data will lead to robotics breakthroughs. Apple might keep up with its Vision Pro data, but it is too freaked out by the privacy implications of using said data. (On the front are six cameras and a couple of TOF -- Time Of Flight -- sensors that can see everything in your home in great detail). Google has a lot of data, for sure. All my: 1. Email. 2. Calendars. 3. Photos. 4. TV watching behavior. 5. Contacts. 6. Documents and spreadsheets. 7. Files. 8. Location data. So I expect Google's robot will be attractive to many. But how do you see the others shake out over the next five years? Make some guesses. But remember what an AI pioneer told me years ago about AI: it's all about the data. The Chinese ones have huge advantages: the Chinese have more data on their citizens, and many more citizens to boot AND they can make robots cheaper than we can. But now that you know OpenAI is building its own robot you have caught wind of what I've heard from many in San Francisco and Silicon Valley: that humanoid robots are the real prize of AI and will be highly profitable for those that can make them and find customers willing to buy them. Here, too, I learned long ago never to bet against Elon Musk. Will you?

OpenAI's Deep Research is getting a run for its money. Deep Lake was just released, and it's a different take on an AI system that can do deep research on your own data. You can use Deep Lake to build AI search with reasoning on your private and public data. (Look at the attached videos to get an idea of how it works.) I don't think Claude dashboards are meant for just making the traditional pretty dashboard/report. You can do that, but I think it's not where the value is. I see Claude dashboards more like a data agent that can really leverage visuals to explain complex data concepts and help you think about and use the data. I think it's the first tool I've used that can do this well, while also hiding the unnecessary "making of the code sausage" from business users and analysts, yet still making queries transparent. I almost wonder if it would've been better to call this Claude Data Analysis or Claude Data Agent so it doesn't carry the baggage of reporting/dashboarding before the AI era that kinda holds it back.

It's so cool that I can send off a prompt with a vague idea of what I want, and the result is a ready-to-merge pull request with a video demo of the changes directly in the PR. The PRs I make with AI are significantly better than the ones I used to make by hand. The future is awesome.
