It is also the position of superiority. If you’re ever walking on a military base and see officers approaching, the higher rank will always be on the right (your left as you approach them). If the other officers are junior to that officer, and a salute is in order, the higher ranking officer will render the salute for all of them. Also, in military courtesy, and tradition, the lower rank on the left is indicative of being the “shield” for the higher ranking, whose right hand is free to wield a sword or other weapon.
