She arrived at just one week old – traumatised, crying, pacing her stable through the night. Today, Kaikai turns one. And if you've followed her story, you'll know she's been running Kaluku ever since she arrived. Mud baths are among her favourite, as is marching ahead with the confidence...

It’s only a few months since I discovered the Sheldrick Trust. I adopted Kaikai for my husband’s birthday & I’m choosing one for me to adopt. I now adore elephants & I so admire the people at the Trust.

Wild elephants visited Kaikai's little mud bath in the night. By morning, only their tracks remained — great platter-sized footprints pressed into the earth. When Kaikai arrived for her midday wallow, she stepped straight into one of them. All four of her tiny feet fit inside a single print. One day, she will leave footprints like that herself. Right now, she is less than a year old, rescued from the Maasai Mara in May 2025 after her mother died of natural causes. She arrived hungry and frightened, a week-old calf with no one to nurse from. She arrived at Kaluku, found her Keepers, and decided — fairly quickly — that she was the centre of the universe. By adopting Kaikai, you become part of the journey between those two sets of footprints — the tiny ones she leaves today, and the ones she will leave when she is wild and grown. Adopt Kaikai:

Welcome Kaikai to the family - she has just joined our adoption program! Orphaned at just one week old, Kaikai survived thanks to the bravery of rangers, the teamwork of dedicated conservationists, and the expertise of our Keepers. She arrived in our care hungry, confused and crying out for her mother – but with tender love and care from our most experienced Keepers, she gradually healed from her emotional trauma. Having found the love of a new family – just in the nick of time – Kaikai has a bright future back in the wild ahead of her. Adopt Kaikai today and you’ll become one of her first adopters. Plus, as part of our Matched Giving Campaign, your donation will be doubled, having twice the impact for orphans like Kaikai. Adopt Kaikai:

This is how you get Kaikai to drink water (well, sort of). She arrived at Kaluku in May 2025 at one week old – a newborn rescued from Mara North Conservancy. Keeper Joseph has been with her since the beginning and knows that if you want to take her in a direction she isn't enthusiastic about, she will do an about-turn and lead everyone elsewhere. So, what to do on a hot day when everyone needs to stay hydrated? You don't ask Kaikai to drink water. You race her to it – then she thinks it's her idea! Become one of Kaikai's foster parents and get to know her too:

Kaikai is 11 months old and nearly every one of those days has been spent at our Kaluku Neonate Unit. This tiny baby was rescued as a newborn from the Mara after rangers discovered her near the body of a dead female elephant. Since that fateful day, she's been raised by some of our most experienced Keepers — Misheck, Joseph and Simon — who shepherded her through the notorious teething stage and will continue to care for her through toddlerhood and beyond. No cardboard box is safe from her. No milk feed gets mixed without her say-so. Sound like the kind of character you'd like to support? Adoptions help fund the daily care, milk feeds and mud baths she needs to thrive. Adopt Kaikai:

Kaikai is ten months old, at our Kaluku Neonate Unit in Tsavo – where the very youngest orphans care receive specialist care, including day and night support from Keepers, lots of cuddles and three-hourly milk feeds. She's glued to her Keepers so she has a designated patch of yard overlooking the milk-mixing area, where she supervises bottle preparation each morning. If the Keepers move too slowly, she shakes her trunk and flaps her ears at them. You can play a part in Kaikai's journey back to the wild by adopting her today:

Kaikai had a remarkable moment with Keeper Joseph in November. They were walking towards Hippo Beach when she suddenly stopped, lifted her tiny trunk, and smelled the wind – turning her head to and fro. She was warning him that something was ahead. Sure enough, Joseph heard wild elephants moving, just out of sight. She's only months old. But already, she's looking out for her family. Adopt Kaikai and get early access to our Keepers’ Diaries and elephant stories for a whole year:

Kaikai was a girl on a mission. She slunk away from the mud bath with one thing in mind: more milk. The empty bottles hadn’t escaped her notice and she had clearly been plotting ever since. Her belly was already full, courtesy of the now-empties, but she thought they might just bear a surprise extra serving. Kaikai isn’t quite big enough to hold her own bottle, but she has fully grasped the technique. It was fascinating (and impressive) to watch her problem solve her way through the situation. She’s such an ingenious little elephant. (And don’t worry, we lent a helping hand in the end) Kaikai is here today because of supporters like you. Rescued as a newborn orphan, she will have a home with us until she is ready to reclaim her place in the wild, a process that may take upwards of a decade. Learn more about Kaikai and perhaps support her through an adoption:

She's not the leader of my party but she is rising in confidence and the polls and she's erudite, intelligent and critically analytical. Labour has no match for her opposition in parliament. She dismantled Starmer et al every week. Applause.

This is what's swarming through your borders and being paid for by you. Anyone believe her, her son, or any of the other millions of people exactly like her will benefit this country one single bit? She's not a refugee, she's not an immigrant, she's not here legally, why is she here? She's an economic drain, a personal/societal threat, and the epicenter of more just like her in the future, she needs to be removed immediately.

I say she's happy being herself, and the people who are bothered by it... they're just jealous of her happiness, and envy is a bad thing. Let her live in peace; she's fine as she is. Addictedtoana

Kaikai woke up with a real spring in her step – she knew she was off to spend the day with her big friends! Mwinzi was Kaikai's special buddy today. As Keeper Joseph said, "When she arrived, everyone came to greet her, especially Mwinzi, with love in his heart." Mwinzi proceeded to flop on the ground, trying to get Kaikai to play with him but she was in more of a snuggling mood. It was a great day for Kaikai – but as you'll see if you watch to the end, Korbessa was grappling with some jealousy. She kept trying to siphon Kaikai away, so they could form a 'girls only' club, and was very frustrated she preferred to be with big brother Mwinzi! Find out how you can adopt Kaikai and help give her the family she needs:

Hang out with Kaikai for a minute. Curious and full of fun, this ten-month-old little girl turns everything into a toy – and the tyre is one of her favourites. Sometimes she likes to rest on it. Other times she shows it who's boss – something she likes to do with the Keepers too! They've given Kaikai her own designated patch overlooking the milk-mixing area, so she can supervise bottle preparation each morning. More from the orphans:

Angel Reese on how much her mom means to her: "Being a single mom, raising me and my brother kind of by herself. Our grandparents were very helpful, but she did a lot of work on her own and for me to repay her by living through her, living through me and being able to just support me and show up, that's all I ask for. Support me, show up and love me, and I'll give you the world. That's just her. That's just who she is. She's not very hard on me, but she's very loving and she's very caring. She's really proud because she know the dark moments that I've been through. I can pick up the phone at 3:00 in the morning, call her crying, and she's just been there for me. And I'm just so thankful to have a mom like that. That's just constantly just being there for me and I don't take it for granted"

We often joke that Kaikai loves the mud bath so much than she would sleep in it, if she could. This is actually more fact than fiction, as she sometimes manages to catch a few winks in the water! Such was the case here. She turned herself around like the face of a clock, took the briefest of siestas, gave herself another quarter turn just for good measure, and then resumed relaxation. We know better than to rush her – it’s Kaikai’s world; we just live in it! Kaikai is one of the youngest orphans in our care. Her mother died of natural causes when she was just a few days old. Now, she has a family with us and wild future ahead of her. Read Kaikai’s rescue story and find out how you can support her journey:
