I'm an American in the NL and every Dutch person I meet speaks perfectly English, so I don't need to learn Dutch. But I did anyway. It's just respectful. I'm in their country, I learn their language. They really appreciate it when I launch into Dutch.

That is such entitlement. I could see not learning the language if you are just a tourist and have a translator. But living there you MUST learn the language or you are a problem in the society and are treating the citizens like they owe you something.
