Officers demanded him to get back into the SUV or face arrest. Just 13 minutes later, officers pulled over the vehicle Mays’ girlfriend was driving near Highland Park Village. During the traffic stop, Mays left the vehicle, hit the officers car, and then struck the officer in the face with a ring on his right hand, causing severe lacerations to the officer’s eyes. The officer then drew his weapon and fired twice, striking Mays once. Mays’ girlfriend fled the scene and is currently being sought by police. Deadly shootout in Northern California after officers apparently failed to properly search a suspect before placing him in the front seat of his cruiser. Mt. Shasta Police Department and Weed Police Department released body cam footage showing the incident that happened on March 21, 2026, during a traffic stop on Interstate 5 near the north Weed off-ramp. An officer pulled over a car traveling northbound at the north Weed off-ramp for multiple violations, including excessive window tint and an unsafe lane change. The officer called for help with a K-9 drug sniff, and a Mt. Shasta police officer responded to assist. During the search, the Weed officer found a large amount of suspected methamphetamine hidden in a stereo speaker box. As the officer approached the man, who was sitting in front of the patrol car, the man pulled out a gun from his waist and pointed it at the officer. The officer then shot the man. Medical help was provided at the scene, and the man was taken to Dignity Mt. Shasta for treatment, where he later died from his injuries. One officer suffered minor injuries from a fall during the incident
