I think there are different reasons. One of them is they don't like some thing(s) about themselves so they decorate it or cover up it up. Try to make it cool or beautiful to themselves with piercings, tattoos, hair color/cuts, etc

I’ve noticed there’s a correlation between nose rings, and big noses. They are self conscious about it.
