Should I bother teaching my son web development? You can now generate and deploy a landing page using natural language! Take a look at the video I recorded. I'll show you how it works. This was impossible a year ago. Dora AI seems to be the first end-to-end AI...

Web development is not just about building a templated presentational layer. Let’s see it enable an authenticated employee upload an image to a gallery which the site shows only after managers reply “ok”back to a phone text with that image for approval.

100%. Web development goes beyond the design of web interfaces. But my son is 8. How much more progress we'll make between now and when it's time for him to do the work? A lot is going to change from now and then. I just don't know what and how.

Yes, but you didn’t answer your question, yes or no?

I don't know the answer. He's learning Python for now. We'll see what happens in a few years.

I say teach him the basics of everything so he can learn to go wherever he wants, and then pivot later to meet market demands if needed. These days you gotta be a generalist and specialist - not just one.

Hey Santiago, I know you're a big shot in the AI community and I really respect your insights on programming and the future of tech. I'm reaching out 'cause I'm in a tough spot and could really use your advice. Since my dad passed away, I've been responsible for my younger siblings - 2 brothers 15 and 14 and a little sister 9. It hasn't been easy, but I'm an Air Force pilot and I'm determined to do right by them and make sure they have every opportunity to succeed, just like my dad would've wanted. It breaks my heart to think that all the sacrifices I'm making might not be enough to secure their future in this crazy fast-moving world of tech. my bros are super talented at coding - they know Python, Java, data structures, AI, and they're even getting into Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Jetson Nano, and 3D printing! And my little sis, she just finished an EdX course on Scratch and is already diving into Python too. I've been paying for private tutors to help them grow, but it's taking almost half my salary each month. It's tough, but I want to give them every chance to thrive. But now with ChatGPT4, Claude 3, and all the crazy advances in AI, I'm really worried that by the time they finish their degrees in CS, software engineering, or EE, the field will have totally changed and all their hard work (and my money) will have been for nothing. I know a lot of other folks in the same boat are probably freaking out too, especially with the CEO of Nvidia saying that the new generation might not even need to learn coding because AI will do it all. It's got me questioning everything. So I guess what I'm asking: 1. Apart from coding languages and AI, what other foundational skills or areas of knowledge do you think will remain valuable and relevant for aspiring programmers and engineers in the long run? 2. How can young students like my siblings cultivate a mindset of adaptability and continuous learning to stay resilient in the face of technological disruptions like the AI revolution? 3. As AI becomes more prevalent in the tech industry, what are some ways that human programmers and engineers can learn to collaborate effectively with AI tools to create innovative solutions? 4. While some traditional roles in tech might be impacted by AI, what new career paths or opportunities do you foresee emerging as a result of these advancements? 5. How important do you think it is for students to balance their theoretical knowledge with hands-on, real-world projects or internships to better prepare for the future of work in tech? 6. Do you believe that having interdisciplinary skills or knowledge (e.g., in business ect will become increasingly valuable for programmers and engineers in an AI-driven world? I want to encourage my siblings to develop a diverse skill set that makes them stand out. 7. With all the uncertainty around the future of tech, what do you think are the most promising or resilient majors for university students interested in this field? Is it still worth pursuing CS, SE, or EE, or should they be looking at other options? 8. A lot of people are talking about the benefits of having a double or dual major to broaden their skill set. Do you think this is a good strategy for aspiring tech professionals, and if so, what combinations of majors would you recommend to complement CS or SE? 9. what's your take on the idea that the next generation might not need to learn coding at all because AI will handle it? Is there still value in learning programming fundamentals, or should kids be focusing their energy elsewhere? I know it's a lot to ask, but your guidance would mean the world to me and my family. I just want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to help them achieve their dreams and make our dad proud. Thanks for taking the time to read this. I know you must get a ton of messages, but even just a few words of advice would be incredible. I'm just a big brother trying his best to look out for his family in these crazy times.

I think the main concepts, mostly the backend will always be useful to know.

Teach him to be exceptional at whatever thing he does, Web development, Real estate, Petroleum engineering, he'd figure it out. This is what will prevent him from being replaced by AI.
