Just being a protective parent, it should not be called "Carnivore Diet" until 18 years old. It should be called "food" up until 18 years old. Feed kids food.

Kids absolutely need high-quality nutrition for growth, brain development, muscle and bone. I think nutrient-dense animal foods like beef, eggs, seafood and dairy, when tolerated, can play an important role. They provide highly bioavailable protein, B12, iron, zinc, choline and other nutrients that growing bodies need. Where I would be careful is turning that into “every child should eat strict carnivore.” We simply do not have good long-term pediatric studies establishing the safety or superiority of a zero-plant diet throughout childhood. Get the ultra-processed food and excess sugar out. Prioritize real, nutrient-dense food and adequate protein. Then individualize from there. Children deserve better nutrition, but they also deserve good evidence.

Notice the trick? Shawn Baker uses ambiguous wordplay to dodge legal liability while still telling parents to feed kids only meat and eggs. Real pediatricians face strict malpractice laws for a reason. Dodging accountability to push a telehealth brand is highly dangerous.

A child’s brain needs two things modern childhood is quietly removing: DHA-rich seafood to build the receiver, and sunlight to deliver the signal. DHA is not merely another “healthy fat.” It is structural material used throughout the brain and retina, helping form the flexible membranes where neurons communicate, receptors move, and synapses transmit information. This is especially important while children are growing. Their brains are rapidly building neural connections, refining sensory systems, and developing the networks involved in learning, attention, sleep, and emotional regulation. The connection to sunlight begins in the retina, which is an extension of the brain. DHA is highly concentrated in the membranes of rods and cones, exactly where the light-sensitive protein rhodopsin operates. When light reaches the eye, a vitamin A-derived molecule inside rhodopsin absorbs a photon. Rhodopsin changes shape, activates a signaling cascade, alters the photoreceptor’s electrical activity, and sends information toward the brain. The photopigment captures the photon, but it must operate inside a healthy membrane. DHA helps create the flexible membrane environment that allows rhodopsin and its signaling proteins to move, interact, and function efficiently. Animal research shows that omega-3 deficiency can make photoreceptor signaling less efficient and impair recovery after light exposure. That is the real DHA and sunlight connection: Sunlight provides the information. The eye receives it. DHA helps build the biological machinery that processes it. The retina also contains specialized melanopsin cells that measure environmental brightness and timing. They send this information to the brain’s central clock, helping regulate melatonin, cortisol, sleep, alertness, hormonal timing, and metabolism. Morning and daytime light are therefore not just illumination. They are daily instructions telling a child’s brain what time it is and coordinating physiology with the outside world. DHA does not magically absorb sunlight or guarantee higher intelligence. It supports the neural and retinal hardware through which light-derived information is processed. This is also why flax, chia, and walnuts are not complete substitutes for marine DHA. They provide ALA, which the body converts to DHA inefficiently. Preformed DHA comes primarily from foods such as salmon, sardines, herring, trout, Atlantic mackerel, and certain algae. The goal is not uncontrolled fish-oil megadosing. It is making appropriate, lower-mercury DHA-rich foods a regular part of a child’s diet, alongside consistent time outdoors.
