Should patients ever be assessed for eligibility for Assisted Dying without having any face-to-face contact with doctors? Sorry, but if face-to-face consultations are not the presumed norm in the Assisted Dying Bill, then tick-box death-by-zoom would be a real threat.

Last week we discussed the Assisted Dying Bill - terminally ill patients should be offered specialised palliative care that can so often alleviate suffering. Too many pushing for assisted dying use the argument of intolerable pain to scaremonger. It is also chilling and galling that the NHS-run state assisted dying scheme will cost a fortune while government policies are destroying many hospices.

MPs are debating and voting on the final stage of a bill today which could legalise assisted dying in England and Wales. I am against this legislation - as I recently discussed on BBC Debate Night. This bill ignores vital safeguards on an individual case by case basis. How can there be an option of death without creating pressure to choose it? And how can there be such an option of death while still affirming each person’s value and humanity? Instead of assisted dying, the focus should be towards assisted living.

One of the reasons I voted against the Assisted Dying Bill is the systemic coercion many older people may face. Elderly people currently pay thousands per month to be in care homes. Many may feel there is a duty to save their family tens of thousands by ending their life early.
