Yesterday we had the Lords statement on Ann Widdecombe. Some lovely tributes from across the House, although some implicit anti-Reform vibes. So glad Kate Hoey called this out. I raised the worry of using Ann's brutal killing to justify yet more state censorship of online opinions. That would be a real insult to Ann, whose Oxford Union speech is now being shared widely - in which she proves her passionate, unapologetic commitment to free speech. Hopefully some of my fellow noble Lords will watch it!

My last speech this term, asking for some perspective in a mini-moral panic debate which called for yet more state intervention to stop young people gambling. I couldn't resist calling out the misuse of stats and the conflation of children and young adults. I was not at all popular in a rather puritan group of Lords. No change there. Oh well, a Westminster-free summer beckons. Phew.

Every Gov inititiative to manage refugee crisis seems designed to shut down public concerns eg closing asylum hotels while dispersing same residents to HMOs or army barracks. Then politicians mad public still protesting. I backed-up Kim Bailey from CrowboroughShield who explained issue brilliantly on BBC Politics but was accused by Labour MP of whipping up a panic. Now Gov imagines cos its community sponsorship scheme is voluntary, outsourcing housing refugees to 'approved' groups, all OK. But approved by who, on what criteria? I rather lost my rag yesterday at a poorly attended short debate on rape gangs and an inquiry. The government wants to talk about child sex abuse per se, but the question is why state agencies and public servants looked the other way in terms of these specific, organised rape gangs. Even now, the government and many in the media refuse to confront how a fear of being labelled racist is still concealing the truth.

My question on the government's statement for the dangerously drafted Conversion Practices draft bill. The Labour minister presents it as fighting against serious abuse, but actually it threatens to criminalise parents for refusing to affirm gender identity (ie trying to 'convert' so-called trans kids). So if Mum insists you aren't born in the wrong body, or Dad refuses to pay for his kid's puberty blockers, the police or social services could be at their door.

Taking Andy Burnham at his word that he'll put miscarriages of justice right, post Hillsborough law, I asked the prisons' minister if he'd draw the new Prime Minister's attention to the IPP scandal, and organise a meeting with IPPers' families. Real frustration among relatives that the excuse for the non release of IPPers is dangerousness - a totally unfair label btw - and made worse when the state is so casually releasing proven dangerous prisoners early (like rapists).

A bit of a lone voice against cross-party fervour of Lords baying to ban social media for the under 16s. It really won't keep kids safe and could create a range of unintended consequences. But also it makes ADULT age-gating ID checks compulsory, for all user to user services. Such was the 'ban it' mood that, when I spoke, there were lots of groaning around me. Let me know what you think.
