Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance as Howard Hughes in The Aviator would be the single biggest achievement for 99% of actors who have ever walked the face of this planet. For Leo, it’s just one of a long list of Earth-shattering performances. DiCaprio gives mind, body & soul to Hughes. He changes his voice, how he walks, how he moves- everything in order to get closer to Hughes. He holds down nearly every moment of a 3 hour film. For my money, Leo is better in this movie than he is in The Wolf of Wall Street. I’m starting to really, really get excited about the fact that a new Leo-Scorsese film is not far off in the distance.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s ability to bring in massive box office dollars allowed Martin Scorsese more creative freedom in the back half of Marty’s career in a way I never fully appreciated until #MrScorsese. Thank God Leo’s used his box office powers to work with Marty for 2 decades.

On the 7th anniversary of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, I still think this is Leonardo DiCaprio’s best performance. He lost the Oscar to Joaquin Phoenix for Joker & it’s a decision that’s aged horribly by the Academy. DiCaprio’s comedic range in this film changed my expectations of Leo as an actor. He reached another level with this film, which also happens to be Tarantino’s best.

Insomnia didn’t make my Christopher Nolan 10 Best Films list. But that speaks to how great Nolan’s filmography is - it’s not a slight against Insomnia, which is a damn good movie & a quality Al Pacino performance. This has to be considered one of Pacino’s best films in the last 30 years. Robin Williams is also outstanding playing against-type as the bad guy here. The point I’m getting at? Christopher Nolan’s never made a bad film.

Quentin Tarantino recalls early in his career, visiting the set of Casino and meeting Martin Scorsese for the first time - and having an “embarrassing” encounter with Don Rickles. “I’d never really met Martin Scorsese before. I got an invite to visit the set of Casino. I’d met De Niro before, but I’d never met Scorsese, and now I was actually going to go onto a Scorsese set — and he knew I was coming. The whole idea was that I’d come by for an hour or two before lunch, watch him shoot, and then we’d have lunch together… Don Rickles was in the movie, and he was on set that day... I’ve just done Pulp Fiction. I’ve only done two movies. I’m meeting one of my heroes for the very first time… This is - the gates of Oz opening up, and me going to meet the Wizard. So, I’m walking in to meet the Wizard. I walk onto the set, and they kind of see me. Then Don Rickles goes, ‘Quentin, thank God you’re here! This guy doesn’t know what he’s doing at all! Thank God a real director has finally showed up! This cat is out of it. Please, this is a disaster. It’s a disaster! Please save us from this wreckage. You are a talented man! The main reason he joined the production was because he had previously done a few comedies, and wanted to play a villain again, and he considered the character of Costello to be the ultimate incarnation of evil. Martin Scorsese really wanted Al Pacino for the role of Costello, because he had never worked with Pacino before, but he turned it down. Jack Nicholson was Scorsese's second choice.
