I have LOVED Civilization since the first one came out. It came out in 1991, and it was one of the 1st DOS big box games I bought when I built my 1st PC in 1993, an 386SX25. I still have 1-5 in Big box, medium box or plastic case, whichever they were sold in.

Often, I debate Sid Meier's masterpiece: Pirates, Civilization, Colonization, Railroad Tycoon... or Alpha Centauri. All are great, but Alpha Centauri wins it for me. Alpha Centauri (1999), by Sid Meier's Firaxis, is a groundbreaking 4X strategy masterpiece and Civilization's spiritual successor. Players lead one of seven ideological factions that crash-land on Planet Chiron orbiting Alpha Centauri, clashing for resources amid hostile alien life like mind worms (yuck...). Gameplay refines Civilization II with social engineering, deep tech trees, customizable units, espionage, and dynamic terraforming - victory is possible via conquest, economics, or transcendence. Hailed for its philosophical narrative and addictive "one more turn" loop, it earned PC Gamer's 98%, a record to this day. Some will argue it's not truly Sid Meier's game, as he only contributed early prototype code and ideas; his name was largely branding, leveraging Firaxis's post-Civilization reputation. Regardless, Alpha Centauri is a masterpiece.

Civilization II (Microprose, 1996) turns 30 this year. When I first saw and played Civilization in 1991, I thought I'd never see a better strategy game. Then, Civilization II was published and everything went up a gear. Better graphics, better diplomacy, better units (good bye Phalanx vs Battleship PTSD from the prequel), more complex gameplay - just exactly what you wished. Keeping the basic principles but making everything better. How is this 30 years ago, when it feels like yesterday? What a game! MicroProse was such a powerhouse back in the day!

If I had to choose just one game (and no other ever again) to play for the rest of my life, I'd go with Civilization (MicroProse, 1991). You can argue some sequels were better (I can't deny that), but the "wow" effect from first playing it in 1991 was so huge it holds a special place in my heart. For a 1991 game, the graphics are pretty good, the sound fits perfectly (rather soothing!), gameplay is complex and variable, and replay value is gigantic. To me, Civilization is as close to perfection as a game can be. That's my pick. What's yours?
