If I had to choose just one game (and no other ever again) to play for the rest of my life, I'd go with Civilization (MicroProse, 1991). You can argue some sequels were better (I can't deny that), but the "wow" effect from first playing it in 1991 was so huge it holds a special place in my heart. For a 1991 game, the graphics are pretty good, the sound fits perfectly (rather soothing!), gameplay is complex and variable, and replay value is gigantic. To me, Civilization is as close to perfection as a game can be. That's my pick. What's yours?

Sammy Virji absolutely shredded at forest hills yesterday. i’ve never seen a crowd so engaged and in sync- he had the entire stadium in a chokehold. his set flowed flawlessly and got better and better as it played out. this was my 4th time seeing virji and he’s sets are getting better and better. i can’t help but wonder what this show would’ve been like at the mirage…

One of the best intros of an era. One of the best games of all time. I often use the word "soul" when I compare old games to new ones - and this one is absolutely bursting at the seams with it Graphics: 10/10 Music: 10/10 Gameplay: 10/10 In 1990, The Secret of Monkey Island was light-years ahead of anything that had come before it. It didn't just look a little better - it completely moved the goalposts. Remember the first time you saw the intro? I thought I'd never see a better game. This one holds a very, very special place in my heart. So, you want to be a pirate, eh? You look more like a flooring inspector.

The original Populous is considered by many as the earliest god game. Fast forward 2 years to 1991, when Populous II was released - a great example of how a sequel should be: bigger, better graphics, and more features, while keeping the core concept untouched. Instead of trying to introduce too many new things, you keep what was brilliant in the first place and fine tune around the edges. For a 35-year-old game, Populous II holds up remarkably well. The only thing that feels a little dated from a modern perspective is the relatively small world screen (the actual game area), which takes up roughly half the display. There's a lot of "dead space" around it that could have been used. I sometimes wonder if this was done for performance reasons - meaning a smaller active area with all the game action happening was easier on the hardware and made the game smoother and faster. My technical skills are far too limited to understand it, but I've often wondered the same about other games with plenty of dead space. It's nitpicking though, the main screen is still big enough and the action is way more polished than the - already brilliant - prequel. Bullfrog, LucasArts, MicroProse... those 3 always pop into my mind when I think of late 80s and early 90s gaming.

At the very least I have to admit that it's very compelling to see such a faithful remake in terms of gameplay in this day and age, this game is quite literally just a copy and paste of SF64 with better graphics, and while I still consider it kind of lame, it's still impressive

The highest selling PC game 30 years ago in 1996 was... Myst. Despite its original release three years prior in 1993, it still dominated the charts, finishing ahead of Warcraft II, Civilization II, and Duke Nukem 3D. Yep, you read that correctly. Let that sink in. Yes, it looks dated now, but in 1993 (and still in 1996) it was pretty awesome. It played a huge role in popularizing CD-ROM drives, which gradually replaced the trusty 3.5-inch floppy disk. Games that once required a dozen floppies could now fit on a single CD, letting developers pack in far more content, especially higher-quality graphics (not always higher-quality gameplay though).

I previously had some early sort of precursors to the Atari system, and then I got the Atari system, which I'm sure a lot of people here have played. But then I saw you could actually have a computer where you could make your own games, and it was a Commodore VIC-20. So that was the first computer I bought. And then I got some books on how to teach yourself programming. And this was like the coolest thing I'd ever seen. So I was just like, this is super awesome. And so I started programming games and then selling games in order to actually buy more games. So a bit of a circular thing. And more games and better computers and that kind of thing. It's hard to describe how impressive Frontier: Elite II was when it was released in 1993. David Braben's masterpiece sequel of Elite (1984) seemingly took forever to be developed, but the result was mindblowing. Trading, combat, exploring - all part of the original Elite concept - but now on a truly galactic scale. If you ever wanted to know what it means to feel small in a game, Elite II showed you exactly that. Often, I would just hop from one planet to another for the sheer joy of flying through space. Literally millions (!) of planets; just like the universe, Elite II seemed to have no end, no frontier. I know when you look at the graphics today, they look very basic, but in 1993 this was stunning. Sometimes it felt more like art than just a game. I was never good at it, never reached Elite status, but it didn't keep me from getting totally lost in space and time.
