The reaction to the OpenAI Greg Brockman video shows why the superintelligence narrative is bad for the AI industry. Compare AI to a rocket company that wants to go to Mars, like SpaceX. They're not saying, "We're racing toward this definitive moment, boots on the ground on Mars. That's our ASI. Then we're done." Instead, the goal is more like: "We're going to colonize Mars and colonize the stars. We're going to make life multi-planetary." And as a rocket company, you can say: "And for that, we need more metal, because we have to make more rockets. Every year we're going to need more metal. Etc." That narrative lands. People take that seriously. Rocket companies are doing something ambitious. The job's never over. We accept this kind of narrative. But AI is hamstrung by the ASI narrative. It's a definitive goal, after which we're just done. So when Greg Brockman tries to communicate that the job's never going to be over, it doesn't sit right with people.

Instead, the goal is more like: "We're going to colonize Mars and colonize the stars. We're going to make life multi-planetary." And as a rocket company, you can say: "And for that, we need more metal, because we have to make more rockets. Every year we're going to need more metal. Etc." That narrative lands. People take that seriously. Rocket companies are doing something ambitious. The job's never over. We accept this kind of narrative. But AI is hamstrung by the ASI narrative. It's a definitive goal, after which we're just done. So when Greg Brockman tries to communicate that the job's never going to be over, it doesn't sit right with people.
