SIGNIFICANT SNOW EVENT FRIDAY 2ND CALL UPDATED MAP TO INCLUDE 10"+ TOTALS Merry Christmas everyone! I've had some time to review the new data and the storm is basically behaving just as I initially thought. There are a few revisions to my 1st call from yesterday morning to account... for HIGHER SNOW RATIOS over NW NJ/Hudson Valley and to move the 6-10" zone into NYC. ZONE 1 – 6–10" OF SNOW This is the zone where cold air damming will be most prevalent, allowing snow to remain all snow for the duration of the event. Expect higher snow ratios, which could allow many areas to push toward double-digit totals, especially under any persistent banding. The pink area of 10"+ accounts for a MUCH higher snow ratio at the start and duration of the storm. This will allow for higher elevations to see many locations pick up 10"+ ZONE 2 – 4–6" OF SNOW This zone will likely start with heavy, wet snow, before transitioning to a lighter, fluffier snowfall as colder air works in. Some compaction is expected with lower snow ratios at times, but additional snow and mesoscale banding could still drive totals toward or above 6" in spots. ZONE 3 – 2–4" WITH MIXING This zone remains VERY uncertain. Everything south of 195 in NJ has a high chance to flip to heavy sleet and rain during convective bandings. I could make a strong argument that cold air advection dominates a tad longer creating an over performer, keeping this mostly snow with sleet mixed in and allowing totals to reach 4–6". However, low-level warm air transport on an easterly wind may introduce sleet, especially along the Jersey Shore (east of GSP) would eat into accumulations. I’ll be watching trends closely as this is shaping up to be a sharp cutoff storm where small shifts could have big impacts.show more

Here's how the GRAF sees the TWO storms hitting the DC region on Tuesday-Wednesday this week. -Has snow starting 12-1pm in DC. -Note temperatures...likely above freezing at onset. We will "lose" some snow initially to ground melt. Recall the January storm, we had VERY cold temperatures leading up to it. Not quite this time. -I still worry the northern end of the I-81 corridor (Winchester up to Hagerstown zone) could underperform due to lighter precip and "mountain dry slotting" you can see this model, like the HRRR, trying to pick up on that a bit. -Snow exits around/after midnight in immediate DC area. We're then dry most of the first half of Wednesday. -Second system approached Wednesday afternoon. This one has much warmer mid-levels, and should be a moderate to heavy rain event for DC. -Cold may lag at the surface west of town. Some freezing rain may mix in, some icing is possible in higher elevations. -Rains will help wash away a lot of Tuesday's snowfall. This snow will NOT last as long as January's did. -Rain exits after midnight, Thursday & Friday are dry.

This Winter Storm is unlike anything I've seen in long time. ⬇️ Here are the facts: 🌎 This is an absolutely MASSIVE storm, spanning over 2,000 miles. Snow and Ice will be falling in Mexico at the same time it’s falling in New York. 🌨️ Widespread Snow Totals of 8–12 inches or more will bury large portions of the country, from Oklahoma City through New York City. ❄️ By definition this will be a Bomb cyclone, and it now looks to become a paralyzing coastal #blizzard for New England, Long Island, and perhaps coastal New Jersey and New York City. Many will receive over a foot of snow Sunday into Monday. Coastal gusts in SE New England may reach #hurricane force 75mph+. This is the latest Hi-Res GRAF (IBM) available as of 4pm Friday. In my opinion it’s likely too far north and west with the heaviest snow, so take snow totals N/W of NYC with a grain of salt, for now, until we get closer to the storm. Still coastal locations in Long Island and SE New England will likely see 1-2 feet! One more note: I love snow, so for me, no snow is too much despite what the legend says :) ❄️ #snow #storm Tri-State Weather Adam tocksin

Live emergency update from the Extreme Cold Warning in Minnesota in the core of the Arctic air mass making this crippling snow and ice storm possible! In this update we look at the short-fuse forecast models of ice accretion and snowfall. North of OKC through the Ozarks and along the Ohio River Valley could see 1-2 FEET of snow. First wave of snow intercepted in Kansas City this morning with a FLUFFY 1-3” of snowfall by late morning Saturday. The second stronger wave tonight into Sunday could drop another 2-4”, with much higher totals south of I70. I am on my way to southern Arkansas into northern Mississippi to cover the #icestorn for AccuWeather

Winter Storm #Gianna is lining up for Chatham. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect 4 AM Sunday through 4 AM Monday. We’re tracking 1–3 inches of snow, with strong, blustery winds gusting 35–40 mph, especially along the Cape. That's How Snow Works If I see another lighter to snowball video I'm going to lose my marbles. I'm a snowballologist and I can tell you based on my extensive 15 minutes of research that snow is mostly air and doesn’t melt as quick as you might think. Let's all just get millions if views lighting snow on fire and pretending it's a grand scheme to, I don't know, blanket the countryside in microplastics? What are we even doing? Y'all got me looking into the latent heat of snowballs when I could be researching the Ancient Sumerians and pyramid power plants. Stop with this. The snow is doing SNOW THINGS.
