There was a time where Islamic countries were embracing progressive ideals, moving forwards not backwards. Now Islamists who believe in a toxic combination of pro-Islam and anti-West have taken over. Our family mosque became a hotbed of Muslim Brotherhood rhetoric and my mother fully bought into it. She felt guilty for not being Muslim enough according to their standards—for not wearing a hijab, for not praying enough, etc. So the only way she could atone was by doubling-down on their ideology. Many parents believe fear is the way to get their child to behave. Some people actually feel proud that their child feared them. Not understanding the cost that comes with any relationship where fear is used to gain control. And there are many costs. The first cause is the lack of trust. A child cannot trust an adult who cannot control their anger or temper. They start to develop hypervigilance from walking on eggshells. Always worried they’ll say or do the wrong thing. They also learn: I need to hide and keep secrets. Anyone raised in an authoritarian, dominating, or highly controlled environment knows this to be true. People from these homes become better at hiding and concealing. They begin to live a “double life” one in the home, and one outside. If a child is punished for the truth, they learn not to tell it. Fear is not the same thing as respect. IF YOU’RE COMFORTABLE, SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE COMMENTS 👇🏼
