.Dylan Patel lays out how we know the hard upper bound on how much compute can be produced annually by 2030: around 200 GW/year. That’s a crazy number (there’s about 20 GW of AI deployed in the world right now), but it’s nowhere near enough to satisfy Sam/Elon/Dario/Demis’s ambitions. Lots of things in the supply chain can be scaled up over 4 years, including things that other people think are bottlenecks, like datacenter power or fab clean room space. But the thing that’s inflexible over that timeline is the number of EUV tools. Dylan forecasts that production of ASML’s EUV tools will scale from 60 per year now to about 100 per year by the end of the decade - which means something like 700 total machines running in 2030. For a fab to make a GW worth of the Rubin chips that NVIDIA is deploying later this year, it needs to make 55,000 3nm wafers, 6,000 5nm wafers, and 170,000 memory wafers. Each 3nm wafers needs about 20 EUV passes, so about 1.1 million passes per GW. Adding on 5nm and memory, you need two million passes. Each tool can do 75 passes per hour, so with 90% uptime that’s around 600k passes per year - so a single machine can make less than a third of a GW in a year. So in 2030, we have 700 total machines, each making 0.3ish GW a year, which means we can produce 200 GW of compute a year. That’s a lot. But Sam Altman wants a gigawatt a week by the end of the decade. Anthropic and Google will be wanting about the same. And Elon wants to be putting 100 GW in space every year. Any one of these players could maybe get what they need, but not all of them.

Marc Andreessen on the 3 things he looks for when investing in a startup The first thing Marc Andreesen looks for is a big market: “Is there a big existing market that you think you can go after and displace incumbents? Or do you believe there will be a new market that will be big?” The second thing he looks for is a 10x better product: “Is there a fundamental technology or economic change that justifies a new company? And the way I always think about that is: Is there a 10x change happening in the technology landscape? Is something 10x faster, 10x cheaper, or 10x better? If it’s not 10x, we as both VCs and entrepreneurs have to ask ourselves if it’s really worth doing because it’s really hard to start new companies . . . Existing companies are usually pretty good at what they do. So for a new company to exist, it has to bring a product to market that’s so much better than what exists that it punches through the status quo.” The third is the team: “Is the team outstanding? . . . You want to have a founding team of complementary skillsets. You want to have at least one super strong technologist — quite possibly more than one. Some of the best startups are actually more than one founding technologist. And then it often helps to have someone who is a marketing or salesperson who has a really good understanding of business.” Marc believes that you need all three of these, but if you’re going to compromise on one of those as an investor, it should be the product: “A great market is a lot easier to make up for with iterative product execution. 💥💥💥 “If we look at #Bitcoin and model it as digital gold, you know the market cap goes to between $10 and $20 trillion, but remember gold is defective property. Gold is dead money. You have a billion dollars of gold that sits in a vault for a decade. It's very hard to mortgage the gold. It's also very hard to rent the gold. You can't loan the gold. No one's going to create a business with your gold, so gold it doesn't generate much of a yield, so for that reason most people wouldn't store a billion dollars for a decade in Gold. They would buy a billion dollars of commercial real estate property and the reason why is because I can rent it and generate a yield on it that's in excess of the maintenance cost. So if you consider digital property, that's a $100 to $200 trillion addressable market, so I would think it goes from $10 trillion to $100 trillion as people start to think of it as is digital property. What does that mean in terms of price per coin? At $500,000 that's a $10 trillion asset, at $5 million that's a $100 trillion dollar asset. So you think it crosses a million, it can go even higher? Yeah. I think it keeps going up forever. I mean there's no reason we couldn't go to $10 million a coin because digital property isn't the highest form right. Gold was that low frequency money. Property is a mid frequency money but when I start to program it faster it starts to look like digital energy and then it doesn't just replace property, then you're starting to replace bonds. It's $100 trillion in bonds, there's $50 to $100 trillion in other currency derivatives and these are all conventional use cases right. I think that there's $350 trillion to $500 trillion worth of currency derivatives in the world and when I say that I mean things that are valued based upon Fiat cash flows. Any commercial real estate, any bond, any sovereign debt, any currency itself, any derivatives to those things, they're all derivatives and they're all defective and they're all defective because of this persistent 7% to 14% lapse in which we call inflation.”- Michael Saylor

RE: Data Center purpose. In addition to building a Digital Enslavement Grid—which is obvious—I think the larger thing they're building is a Machine that predicts AND creates the future. Because a machine that can predict the future is also essentially able to create the future simply by adjusting the inputs. They're trying to make a world that's currently indeterminate & uncertain into one that's determinate & certain—through the power of modeling & simulating entire worlds and entities billions of times, and creating a Future-Making All-Seeing-Eye Super Intelligence. Cyber god. If Your Future Machine is better, faster & smarter than The Other Guy's, your future wins. If Your Cyber god is more powerful than The Other Guy's, Your vision wins. Reality becomes what you decide. You can cripple all opposition, and subdue all others beneath you. Think of the world like a giant game of chess. If Your Machine plays better chess than The Other Guy's Machine, it's checkmate for him every time. To use another analogy: think of the classic idea that a butterfly flapping its wings in one part of the world creates a storm in another part of the world. We're talking about the power to know which butterfly, and where, is needed to create said storm, when and where. And the power to defeat The Other Guy's butterfly. Unfortunately, we Americans are all "the other guy" in this scenario (along with virtually every other people in the world). And the power of the future and reality will reside with who controls The Machine, who commands Cyber god. This "Data Center" push is nothing less than building the ability to seize absolute power over the world and shape the future into whatever vision the Tech Oligarchs desire for us, and we won't be able to do anything about it. Checkmate. Right now, they're positioning the pieces. Our window is limited. We're on the clock. Thoughts? I think—and I'll make this prediction here—that you're going to see some of the major customers of Anthropic and major customers of OpenAI (I'm talking about the 8- and 9-figure customers, people spending $50 million, $100 million a year) leaving. They're going to be leaving because they don't trust those companies to not steal the application layer and to compete with them. ElevenLabs, Figma, Lovable—they're all gonna leave, and they're all gonna take Kimi, or they're gonna fork it or DeepSeek. They're all... I know for a fact they're all working on their own models currently. I know from my team; my team has installed Kimi. It is 90% cheaper already. Not sure where you get your data from, but go on OpenRouter. And what OpenRouter does is you pick Kimi stacks, and then you get all the providers there, and then you pick which provider—hold on, let me finish—and you pick them based on their data retention and other issues, and you can dynamically pick the lowest one. That's going to be a massive headwind against these companies. Massive.
