A while ago, I posted about games that looked great but had terrible gameplay/controls. The one that stuck with me was Dragon's Lair, but there were so many more mentioned in the comments that I had totally forgotten about. Today, I want to turn the question around - games that looked rather basic (or even poor) but had incredible gameplay. So, basically the polar opposite of Dragon's Lair. The choice for me was rather easy: M.U.L.E. (Ozark Softscape, 1983). Back then the graphics were ok but nothing to write home about. However, the reason why this game still has such a cult following and so many fans today - over 40 years later - is its gameplay. I never had more fun in a multi-player game. The land grabing, the auction system, supply and demand principles, and the many last second buy/sell antics have lost none of their charm. It's a game that aged beautifully because the concept and gameplay are as good today as they were back then. If you had to pick a game that ranks rather low in terms of presentation but fascinated you for its gameplay, which one would that be?

Who here is old enough to remember when Myst (1993) blew everyone away? It was a straight-up revolution! Well, that's how it felt like at the time. Developed by brothers Rand & Robyn Miller (Cyan), Myst had over 2,500 photorealistic pre-rendered images, 40 minutes of original ambient music, and 66 minutes of video on a single CD-ROM. Many say it helped kickstart the CD-ROM era (1993 was still heavily dominated by 3.5" disks), which was an expensive hardware luxury back then. It looked and sounded like nothing else. There was no combat. No death. And also no hand-holding. Just you, a mysterious island, books, levers, codes, and puzzles in beautifil, lonely worlds - you had to figure it out, the gameplay was open and non-linear. It felt like stepping into a painting, and you could argue it was one of the first games with true immersion (again, for its time - remember this was 1993). It sold over 6 million copies, and stayed the best-selling PC game for 9 (!) years until The Sims in 2002. It created a whole new audience and changed what people expected from PC gaming forever, the bar was raised to a whole new level. For the first time a game also had real appeal to the non-hardcore gamers. It pulled in more female players than any other game before. For its time it was pure magic.

An absolute legend of gaming history turns 40 this year: Gunship by Microprose was released in 1986. For many, many years it remained the undisputed benchmark for helicopter combat simulations. It was universally praised for its graphics, weapons, sound, controls, realistic physics, and documentation (the famously long and historically accurate MicroProse manuals, this one was over 80 pages long). You fly an AH-64 Apache and can play endlessly in the career mode (no classic "end game scenario"), reaching a rank as high as Brigadier General. By the end of the 80s it had sold over half a million copies, making it one of MicroProse's most successful games of the decade.

Fatal Fury Special was ported to the PC Engine CD, and at that level, it’s fair to call it an almost perfect conversion. The Super Famicom version suffered from hardware limitations and was handled by Takara, a different company, so the results weren’t particularly impressive. In contrast, the PC Engine CD version of Fatal Fury Special was developed directly by SNK as a test case for CD-based game production before the release of the Neo Geo CD, which explains its exceptionally high level of quality.

The SNES version had some of its gore effects censored in comparison to the PC/DOS release. Re-released for the Switch, PS4, Windows, and Xbox One as part of the Blizzard Arcade Collection (2021).

1993 Captured in early HD format is like a Time Machine. This is the most crisp video I have seen from this era. In 2002 D-Theater launched in the US - the dealers needed a demo tape of HD footage. JVC reused some HD video that had been shot as a demo for the Japanese HD market back in 1993. This footage would have most likely been originally used for a HiVision MUSE demo (an HD Broadcast, Tape & Laserdisc format). You can determine that the year is 1993 by the adverts in Times Square - The Radio 501 CD that's advertised on a billboard came out in 1993 and Paper Moon is playing at the Marquis Theater. For those wondering what HD video camera tech existed in 1993 - there are a few options, but it's likely that this footage was shot with a HDVS camera- perhaps a Sony SONY HDC-500 attached to a HDV-10 portable recorder which recorded on UniHi 3/4" tape. Music - Living for the City - Muzak Version (Originally Stevie Wonder) / Autumn in New York - Kimiko Itoh.

Some games had a wonderfully soothing and relaxing vibe - usually the slow paced "build your empire" games. Few have done it better than Anno 1602 (Max Design, 1998), which I consider among the best ever of its kind. I can't think of too many Austrian game studios, MAX Design being the rare exception. Generally, games that were created in and for the German speaking market, didn't do that well outside of those, but the first Anno game (many, many sequels followed) was so incredibly popular, that it remained the #1 selling game in Germany for 5 years until 2003, and its success helped it boost sales overseas, too. Total sales for Anno 1602 eventually closed in on 3 million, an unheard number for a small game studio at the time. What was normally a male dominated industry, got turned on its head a bit, with a large portion of the Anno 1602 players being female. The Anno series had 7 more sequels, the latest one being published in 2025.

Castlevania, known in Japan as Akumajō Dracula, turns 40 this year. It was released in 1986 for the Famicom Disk System (or NES outside of Japan). I found this game to be both highly addictive, super tough and - at times - frustrating. What can't be denied is its cult status and longevity, with the latest title of the series (Haunted Castle Revisited) being published in 2024. A brilliant platformer, if you had the skills (which I didn't). Note: Video edit is the 1987 NES version, which came after the original 1986 Famicon debut.

The alleged shooter of Charlie Kirk was arrested immediately, then released soon after, when the police determined he was not the shooter. But listen to what he's saying: "shoot me, shoot me", this isn't the normal reaction. He could be acting as a distraction for the real shooter to escape. I'm not saying he's directly involved, but there is certainly an immediate and implicit understanding between some in the crowd with the shooter. This and the fact that not a single surveillance footage has been released, all point towards a coordinated sanction hit. This is a university, it's filled with cameras.

Pac Man?" - that was originally an arcade game and later ported to the Atari 2600. Pitfall! topped the billboard charts for a whopping 64 consecutive weeks, that's well over a whole year. And to give you an idea how popular the game was at its peak: Try to picture 14,000 fan letters (per week!), many with hand-drawn maps of the jungle. Activision, the publisher, had to hire extra staff just to handle the mail. If that's not an indicator of pop culture impact, I don't know what is. Chanley Painter: “He had to spend 8 hours behind bars… Police say he was speeding in a neighborhood… when he tried to pass a truck pulling a trailer in front of him. Woods clipped the trailer and rolled his SUV, skidding across the pavement.
