Hills I will die on as someone who has coached high school football for over 29 years: 1. If you are not PASSIONATE about blessing, serving, and empowering those you are blessed to coach, this profession is not for you. 2. As much as we need to know our trade, getting to know (and to love), our players is far more important. 3. This is an INTENSE game, and it’ll never be “just a game”, but it IS a game. Remember that when you’re with your team, and more importantly, remember that when you’re with your family. 4. Just as we teach our athletes to “leave things better than they found them”, we need to leave our athletes better than they were when they first entered into our program. Never let a day pass without pouring into each and every individual. 5. Life is complicated enough, let’s not complicate the game in such a way that we take the joy of it away from others. In other words… Keep it simple. 6. Our words carry little (or NO), value, if we don’t practice what we preach. WE as coaches should be learning and growing each and every day, just as we expect our athletes to. 7. As much as we all want to win those championship rings for our athletes, make sure you don’t lose your wedding ring in the process. 8. The athlete that may be “difficult to reach/teach” (the one who may get on your last nerve more than you could ever imagine), is someone’s EVERYTHING. Get to know them as human beings, find out what motivates them, and do everything you can to help them to thrive. 9. Be where your feet are. Don’t fall into the trap of chasing logos and thinking that a higher division, a bigger school, or going from HS to college, or even college to the pros, is going to be more rewarding or fulfilling. 10. Is it just me or have American car companies turned to absolute junk 💩 This is why we have Toyota, Subaru, and Honda in my household. The Japanese actually make really great cars and my favorite is Toyota. Toyota has earned its reputation as one of the best car companies in the world by doing something deceptively simple: building vehicles that keep working. While many manufacturers chase flashy technology, complicated drivetrains, and constant redesigns, Toyota has traditionally placed enormous emphasis on reliability, durability, and manufacturing quality. Engines and transmissions are often refined over many years rather than replaced simply for the sake of novelty. That conservative engineering philosophy is a major reason so many Toyotas routinely survive 200,000 or even 300,000 miles with basic maintenance. Toyota’s quality control is another major advantage. The company’s famous production system emphasizes consistency, identifying defects early, and continuously improving manufacturing processes. That attention to detail translates into vehicles that tend to age gracefully, with fewer catastrophic failures and strong resale values. Models like the Camry, Corolla, 4Runner, Tacoma, Land Cruiser, and Prius have built decades-long reputations for dependability. In many parts of the world, Toyotas are chosen for difficult conditions precisely because owners trust them to start every morning and keep going. Toyota is not always the fastest, most luxurious, or most exciting manufacturer. That is almost the point. A great car should not constantly demand your attention. It should quietly carry your family, commute every day, survive road trips, and still be running years after the payments are gone. Toyota’s greatest luxury is they actually freakin' work. Now can we please make the Hilux legal in the United States again?

So let's talk about what Rick Jackson really means here, and why it shows he should not be governor. At a press event, Mr. Jackson said that “not having [health] insurance in Georgia does not mean you don’t have healthcare.” It is a common trope used by Republicans to avoid addressing our high uninsurance rates, particularly in Medicaid non-expansion states like ours. What he is likely referring to is EMTALA, a 1980s federal law that states patients who go to the emergency room must be seen and receive "stabilizing care" before discharge. If you show up at an ER bleeding to death, for example, the hospital needs to at least address the cause of the bleeding before sending you on your way. That is not "healthcare" in the sense that most people think of it. That is battlefield triage. EMTALA does not provide for maintenance healthcare--non-emergent treatment of hypertension, or diabetes, or heart disease. EMTALA does not require preventative care, like cancer screenings or annual physicals. EMTALA does not require coverage for medications, prenatal care, mental healthcare, outside of emergencies. EMTALA, essentially, puts into statute a principle that no one should need explained. If someone needs urgent care, you help them, regardless of their insurance status. But it does not cover the costs for that care. Nor does not provide a mechanism for hospitals and providers to recoup the expense of providing that care. What this means in a state like Georgia, with among the highest rates of health uninsurance in the country, is that more uninsured patients will put off preventative and maintenance care because they can't afford it. They will present to the ER only when they have to, sicker than they needed to be, incur the most expensive form of healthcare possible (catastrophic care through the ED), and then be unable to cover those costs out of pocket. Who ends up eating those costs? The providers. The hospitals. The state. The taxpayers. Rick Jackson, the multibillionaire healthcare staffing company CEO who is now running for governor, doesn't think this is a problem for the state he is trying to lead, even as state agencies are being told to tighten their belts and we anticipate revenue shortfalls. This putative healthcare business expert can't see the issue with insisting that he will refuse to expand Medicaid and avail patients of the coverage they need, funded by the federal tax dollars we’ve already been paying for more than a decade. And he wants to tell the rest of us who understand the issue that we're wrong. This man cannot be the next governor of Georgia. Our healthcare system could not survive a Governor Jackson.

HTML Artifacts are a big part of how I work with agents now. Artifacts can be more than just static files. When combined with agents, they can take action or help you take action. This unlocks all kinds of interesting ways to work with agents. This is clearly the future. Check out this writing and scheduler artifact I built in a few minutes. It uses a bit of HTML and JS. All the data is in markdown (Obsidian vaults), so the agent can access and modify it at any time. No DB needed. No sophisticated functionalities. The agent decides all that for me based on the skills, context, and memory it has access to. The best part about this simple stack is that all the important information stays with me. This has allowed me to build a recursive self-improving system and automations that can better tap into coding agents like Codex or Claude Code. I could have paid or built an entire app for scheduling posts, and there are so many of them out there. But I don't need to. I've realized a simple artifact does the job. And the simplicity of it is actually an advantage. Very little maintenance for very high returns on personalization, time, and efficiency. The other benefit of this is that I can add features as I please. That level of personalization feels magical, and we should all be pursuing more of it. All of this just keeps compounding. Of course, this example is just about writing. But I have similar artifacts for research, design, experimentation, evaluation, and so much more. And no, I didn't actually publish the post example I shared in the clip. It was just for demonstration purposes. I actually spend more time than this when writing together with agents. Lastly, having built my own agent orchestrator tool has made me realize that simplifying the tool stack is a superpower. Today was my hardest workout before the Javelina 100—an uphill treadmill supercompensation session accumulating 60 minutes of intervals at 10% grade, starting at threshold and ending harder. I think uphill treadmill threshold sessions can be magical for some athletes. Threshold work is classically defined as LT2 or easier, around what you could sustain for 1 hour. In practice, that feels relatively relaxed at first, and it only starts to get harder after you accumulate a substantial amount of volume. The rationale of threshold work is that it improves lactate shuttling, helping mitochondria be more efficient at processing and transporting lactate, preventing fatigue cascades even at harder efforts on other days (or at easier efforts in marathons or ultras). In other words, it’s primarily an aerobic stress. Faster is not better. The real-world obstacles with threshold work are twofold. First, for most of us, it’s pretty slow when done right, or way too hard when done wrong. A study on the training of elite athletes found that long intervals had the lowest correlation with long-term growth, and this conundrum is probably why—athletes do their long intervals too hard, breaking themselves down without the mechanical or aerobic stimulus to justify it. Second, outdoor threshold work can be an injury risk. If I tried this workout outdoors, it would wreck my calves and high hamstrings for days. The uphill treadmill can help athletes get around these hurdles. It’s slower by design, putting the emphasis squarely on the aerobic system. That helps athletes develop a much more precise understanding of threshold. But perhaps most significantly, the uphill treadmill reduces impact forces immensely. When I finish one of these—even a supercompensation session—I feel fine the next day, allowing me to absorb way more work (and more specific work to my goals). Particularly with age, I find that running training is about managing the efforts that are high impact to be limited and focused. A viral paper "Language Model Represents Space and Time" recently claims that LLMs learn "world models". As much as I like Max Tegmark's works, I disagree with their definition of world model. World model is a core concept in AI agent and decision making. It is our mental simulation of how the world works given interventions (or lack thereof). A world model captures causality and intuitive physics, telling the agent what is likely and what is impossible. It can and should be used for counterfactual reasoning, i.e. "what ifs": what would happen if I knock over a cup of water? Where would I have been if I had not taken that bus? Yann LeCun Yann LeCun says it well in his position paper ( I quote: "Using such world models, animals can learn new skills with very few trials. They can predict the consequences of their actions, they can reason, plan, explore, and imagine new solutions to problems. Importantly, they can also avoid making dangerous mistakes when facing an unknown situation." The first use of the term World Model in deep policy learning is attributed to hardmaru & Jürgen Schmidhuber: In their seminal paper, an agent masters shooting skills in the popular game Doom (demo below) by learning in imagination, using an internal world model as a "physics simulator". To put in a simple Python math formula, world model learns a function F(s[0:t-1], a) -> s[t:], which takes as input the observed past and current action, and outputs plausible future states. Now the definition of World Model in Tegmark's paper seems to be about predicting GPS coordinates and time eras. I see this as just a classification task with no causal learning and simulation going on. You cannot make meaningful interventions against that model, nor can you optimize any decision making in a closed feedback loop. As for the "space & time neurons", I think they are most similar to the "sentiment neuron" that OpenAI published in 2017: Predicting GPS is conceptually no different from predicting sentiment in my opinion. I don't think their experimental results are wrong - just that their conclusion is on shaky grounds. I welcome any debate! Paper link:

Nobody’s perfect. This week I’ve been exploring attachment, a deep emotional bond between infants and their parents. In prior posts we’ve discussed four different attachment styles, with an emphasis on the most desirable and healthy of them all: secure attachment. Yesterday I emphasized that attachment styles result not from how you interact with your child SOME of the time, but how you interact ALL of the time - by which I mean that the totality of your interactions and the consistent and predictable patterns you establish with your child are what determines these outcomes. For this reason, your default mode should be warm and responsive. But today I want to insert a small, but important, caveat. Or at least a little more nuance. Nobody’s perfect. Nobody. As a well-intentioned parent it’s easy to hold yourself to an impossibly high standard. And that’s a recipe for fueling your own anxiety and ill health. The truth is that you can’t be instantly responsive 24/7 to your child’s every possible need. This isn’t an excuse to slack off. But it is a reminder to be kind to yourself. Parents are human. And we all have our lesser moments. We can be moody, stressed, exhausted... Sometimes we’re upset. Or distracted. And sometimes you need to take a shower. Or answer a knock on the door. Life happens. And the last thing I want you to take away from this conversation is a sense that any missed opportunity - or even the occasional boneheaded mistake - will cause your child irreparable harm. Instead think of attachment kind of like a jury might in a civil trial: what does the preponderance of the evidence suggest? Are you ALMOST always meeting your mark? If so, take this post as a little peace of mind. Secure attachment doesn’t require a perfect report card. If it did, secure attachments likely wouldn’t exist. The late pediatrician Donald Winnicot is credited with the concept of “good enough parenting” - which I’ve always found to be a really useful frame. This same concept holds true for lots of other advice that I’ve offered, by the way. Do you want to plop your baby in front of a screen all day? Absolutely not. Is it realistic to think they’ll never be exposed to one? Also probably not. Parenting isn’t an all or nothing proposition. So aim high… but give yourself a little grace. As instructed in this video posted to IG by digitalmumincome, I’m sharing it to let you know you’re doing an amazing job. (If you read regularly you’ll know this child is actually in active sleep - which sometimes includes eye opening… and most likely smiling reflexively…but it’s cute and its other message fits today’s post. For this reason, your default mode should be warm and responsive. But today I want to insert a small, but important, caveat. Or at least a little more nuance. Nobody’s perfect. Nobody. As a well-intentioned parent it’s easy to hold yourself to an impossibly high standard. And that’s a recipe for fueling your own anxiety and ill health. The truth is that you can’t be instantly responsive 24/7 to your child’s every possible need. This isn’t an excuse to slack off. But it is a reminder to be kind to yourself. Parents are human. And we all have our lesser moments. We can be moody, stressed, exhausted... Sometimes we’re upset. Or distracted. And sometimes you need to take a shower. Or answer a knock on the door. Life happens. And the last thing I want you to take away from this conversation is a sense that any missed opportunity - or even the occasional boneheaded mistake - will cause your child irreparable harm. Instead think of attachment kind of like a jury might in a civil trial: what does the preponderance of the evidence suggest? Are you ALMOST always meeting your mark? If so, take this post as a little peace of mind. Secure attachment doesn’t require a perfect report card. If it did, secure attachments likely wouldn’t exist. The late pediatrician Donald Winnicot is credited with the concept of “good enough parenting” - which I’ve always found to be a really useful frame. This same concept holds true for lots of other advice that I’ve offered, by the way. Do you want to plop your baby in front of a screen all day? Absolutely not. Is it realistic to think they’ll never be exposed to one? Also probably not. Parenting isn’t an all or nothing proposition. So aim high… but give yourself a little grace. I'm Chesnyy—CKC high-point Rottweiler in rally obedience for the last two years. 🏆🐾 But last season was ruff. Static from the wheelchair tires caused shocks when I heeled, and twice the floor mats caught in the castors and the entire floor started to chase me...I started getting suspicious any time we went in a ring. It didn't feel fun anymore. And there were a lot of other life changes last year so we were already dealing with stress. And trust me, us dogs can smell human stress a mile away and it does affect us. We took the fall and winter off from trials—no rings, no judges. Just my regular work days, treats, snoozes, and puppy adventures. Now we're back: we're easing our way in. Instead of going right back to Master level rounds, we're starting back at intermediate AND advanced rounds this weekend. This will make sure neither the human or I get too stressed. And yeah—we're the only wheelchair-handler team around so sometimes between travel, unloading, set-up, and dealing with accessibility challenges she's already running on empty before we hit the ring entrance.
