Most importantly, you need to have principles that deal with reality. Embrace reality, deal with it, and have those core principles. If everyone took the time to write down their principles and think about how to deal with specific situations, the world would operate a lot more effectively. I’ve been through those experiences and I wrote down my recipes. You can consider my recipes, or anyone else’s recipes, but at the end of the day, you must believe them and do what is good for you. Because if you don’t have principles, everything looks the same. Mike Macdonald on John Harbaugh: "I don't think it's possible to overstate his influence on me. I love John Harbaugh. He's one of my biggest mentors, was willing to take chances on me when other people weren't and invested in me and my career throughout. ... He had a vision for me and my career that I probably didn't have for myself. All those principles that are a part of his program that he's about as a person resonated with me. Those are a lot of the foundational principles that we brought to Seattle. ... I can't tell you how much I love him."

I'm looking forward to the AMA I’ll be doing on Reddit, Inc. (r/IAmA) on September 4th from 1-3PM ET. For over 50 years, I’ve been in the business of studying the cause/effect relationships that drive how reality works and developing principles for dealing with reality well. I then programmed these principles into computers as decision rules to bet on them working. Because the causes come before the effects, this principles-based approach worked amazingly well for me. Since I’m 76, I’m now at a stage in my life that I want to pass along what’s of value. So far, I’ve passed along my perspectives and principles about how to approach life, work, the changing world order, debt, and markets in my books, videos, and social media. But I think that what is most important is that you have your own good principles and perspectives that suit you, and I believe in thoughtful disagreement to find out what’s best, so I love have exchanges about how the world works with you and others. If you want to ask me anything, you don’t have to wait for the AMA to begin. We’re going to collect questions from my social media pages so I can answer as many as possible when the time comes. I highly recommend listening to this moving conversation between Chuck Swindoll and his daughter, Colleen Thompson, which took place in 2022, when Swindoll was 88 years old. In it, he shares details about the pain of being raised in a home where he was shown almost no affection and was bluntly informed that he had been "a mistake." His concluding prayer is poignant and reveals the heart of a man who has learned through hardship to be humble, grateful, joyful, and content: "Lord, we are grateful that You do know the way that we take. You never learn that way. You know it. You knew it would be like it is today, and You knew that in eternity past. You're always on our side. No one could love us more than You love us. No one could have more compassion for us or have our good at heart more than You do. So grateful... Remind us of David's words: 'I waited patiently for the Lord, and He inclined unto me and heard my cry. He lifted me up from a horrible pit and put my feet on a rock and established my goings. He put a new song in my mouth even praise to my God. Many will see it and fear and trust in the Lord.' Thank you, Father, for this day and for helping me get through this story. Thank you for my original family and all of its struggles and difficulties, that my mother never aborted me, that she bore me. And though my mom and dad really didn't know me and who I was, they cared for me. They fed me. They clothed me. They provided shelter for me. Thank you for that. And today, I honor them. For a brother and sister who did so well in life, and now they're with You, thank you for the reminder of their lives. The entire building erupted in chants of “USA!” after he shared an unforgettable conversation he once had with Charlie Kirk about death. “I had a conversation once with Charlie where we were talking about the danger that we both faced from challenging entrenched interests. And he asked me if I was scared to die. And I said to him, ‘There’s a lot worse things than dying.’” Kennedy continued: “And one of the chief among us is losing our constitutional rights and having our children raised in slavery. “I said to him at that time, ‘Sometimes our only consolation is that we can die with our boots on. If you think the rise of radical Islam and Sharia law in America isn’t a problem, you’re not paying attention. There are organized groups that openly reject our Constitution, our culture, and our values, and they want to replace them with something fundamentally incompatible with the American way of life. This isn’t about tolerance. It’s about survival as a constitutional republic. We need leaders who are willing to step up, speak the truth, and defend this nation without apology. Leaders who understand that America has one Constitution, one set of laws, and zero room for ideologies that seek our destruction. Defending our founding principles isn’t extreme. Surrendering them is.
