SURPRISE — we’re seeing double! 🦒🦒 Two weeks ago, we shared that the Zoo welcomed a female giraffe calf and that our friends at the TODAY Show were helping us pick her name … but the evening following that announcement, we welcomed a SECOND female calf! 🥹💕 Born just 13 days apart, the girls share the same dad, Apollo, but have different moms — Kala welcomed the first calf, and Acacia welcomed the newest little one. And now, they're both out on habitat with the herd! After spending time bonding with their moms and meeting the rest of the giraffe herd behind the scenes, our adorable duo has officially made their African Savanna debut (with a little soft launch yesterday 🤭). We're also excited to share that TODAY has officially announced the winning name for Kala's calf: Kumi! Kumi is Swahili for "10," honoring the fact that she is Kala's 10th calf. We're still finalizing a name for Acacia's little girl, but she's already easy to spot! Acacia is a Rothschild's giraffe, while a majority of our herd is made up of reticulated giraffes. She passed along a bit of her unique patterning to her calf through the darker brown coloring on her lower legs. We've affectionately nicknamed them her "shin guards" since she arrived during the Summer of Soccer in DFW. ⚽️🦒 We can't wait to watch these two girls grow up together — and now you can, too! 🥰

After 6 trips to the winners circle and 3 stakes wins… we have made the decision to retire SWEET REBECCA from racing 🏇 She has arrived to the farm safely where she will now call home and begin her next journey as a broodmare for Resolute Racing She has given us plenty to be proud of and as a favorite of Chelsey Stone Stewart we look forward to seeing what she can produce as they are sure to be as tough and talented as she has been. Thank you to everyone that has had a hand in her career 👏

Our giraffe herd has grown by one not-so-little GIRL! 💕 Born in the evening hours of May 31, she stood 6’2” tall and weighed 152 lbs. at birth. This little one was born to mom, Kala, and dad, Apollo. The calf has been bonding well with mom behind the scenes since birth, with plans to meet other herd members and make her debut on habitat in the coming days (weather permitting)! But … we need help choosing her name! Our friends TODAY announced her birth on-air this morning and opened a poll to vote on her name! The vote opened today and will end with a name announcement on TODAY on June 27! Visit this link ( to vote between three name options: Kumi — Swahili for 10, in honor of her being Kala’s 10th calf Honey — Because she’s sweet as can be! Iris — A tribute to the native plant & flower Stay tuned for more on this little one! 💕

Slow paced misty mornings in Umani are a thing of the past, since the birth of Murera’s baby Mwana. She’s full of beans from first light, keeping her Keepers on their toes. Nanny Enkesha’s been getting in extra steps too, as she looks to keep up!

My Chief of Staff Larissa has served our community for a decade. From my time as a State Representative to our years in Congress, she has been a tremendous partner. As she now transitions to Mayor Sheffield’s team, I want to thank her for her years of service to our families.

Meet Twiggy – Kaluku’s kind-hearted ‘security guard’. Twiggy was rescued from Tsavo East National Park as an infant after she tried to pass herself off as a zebra, tagging along with a passing herd. With no sign of her mother, lions nearby and dusk approaching, we leapt into action in a daring rescue to save the lone giraffe. Now at our Kaluku Nursery, Twiggy has settled beautifully amongst the eclectic herd of orphans who are growing up here. Her gentle nature and towering presence make her the perfect guardian to smaller orphans like Bean the warthog, and she takes the role seriously; always the first to notify the Keepers of any potential threats in the area. Your support ensures our Kaluku orphans, and those in Umani, Ithumba, Voi, Kaluku, and Nairobi, can grow up and thrive in safe and secure surroundings. Adopt Twiggy today:

A woman from Empangeni is one of those affected by the departure of her Malawian boyfriend. She expressed deep concern as the father of her child has reportedly been told to leave. She revealed that she has one child with the Malawian man. She also said that she has another child from a Zulu man who, according to her, abused her, and she disclosed his name. The woman made a strong appeal for employment, saying that she now faces uncertainty as her boyfriend is leaving. The couple had been living together in Sherwood.we

She may have walked to the house alone, but today people from all walks of life stand behind her. From different countries, different languages, & different walks of life yet our hearts beat as one. Africa is standing together for Thandeka❤️ This journey has been filled with so many moments that shaped Thandeka’s story in the house. She has laughed, cried, celebrated & pushed through challenges. Even this edit can’t capture them all! Thalians, it is because of your support & love that she’s still here. She has given her all in that house, let’s give her our all through our votes🙏🏼 #ThandekaTshabalala #BBMzansiS6 #BBMzansi

Eight months after she left with a wild boyfriend, Twiggy came back to say hello. She made straight for the stables, where she stooped her head to each of her former Keepers in turn. Then she was down at the mud bath with the orphaned elephants and loitering in the gardens with the smaller orphans, as though the past eight months spent roaming the wild had never happened. She is in impeccable condition and we're thrilled to have her around as long as she chooses to stay. Are you one of our giraffe adopters? Read her full update:

It's easy to see how Pips evaded rescuers for hours: her coat is perfectly designed for camouflage. When she became orphaned, it worked well enough to evade the area's lions – a fate that befell her mother – until our rescuers got to her. Now safe at our Nursery, Pips has revealed herself to be a giraffe full of character. For most of the day, she is quite sedate and composed. But then, without warning, she gets a fit of the zoomies – and we see an entirely different giraffe! She races around like a whirling dervish, legs flailing every which way, putting on a very impressive show. And then, just like that, reserved Pips returns. We're raising Pips until she is ready to return to the wild. Find out how you can support her care through an adoption:
