In his resignation speech this morning, Sir Keir Starmer said: “Six years ago I inherited a party that was...morally bankrupt.” He elaborated, declaring: “We changed our Party, ripping out the poison of antisemitism.” The reality is that Sir Keir’s record on antisemitism is a very mixed bag. He sat in the antisemite Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet for years and backed him to become Prime Minister. Only later, following electoral defeat and then the EHRC report, which followed our referral, did he decide that the Party had become “morally bankrupt” and needed antisemitism torn out “by its roots”. To his credit, he then did change the Party in relation to antisemitism from what it was under Mr Corbyn, who, to underscore the scale of the change, is no longer even a member. Still, the Party has more to do – year on year in our polling of British Jews it is viewed as more tolerant of antisemitism among its officeholders than any other. The remedial job is not over. But Sir Keir deserves gratitude for starting that process. Addressing antisemitism in a political party is one thing. Confronting it in society is another, and far more urgent. On that score, Sir Keir, like his predecessor, has been a failure. Antisemitism in Britain has surged to levels unknown in living memory. That has taken place under the watch of this Government and the last one, across two parties, with no end in sight. Not only has far too little been done, even after repeated promises, but Sir Keir’s Government has even taken measures that have made matters worse, with some foreign policy declarations pouring fuel on the fire. As the country looks forward, addressing this shocking extremism in our society must be a top priority for Sir Keir’s successor. CAA will be there every step of the way, to support the right policies and call out the failures.

"This was filmed last Thursday at Riverside Veterinary Clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The officer is Sergeant Alan Briggs. He's 44 years old. Twelve-year veteran of the Colorado Springs Police Department. The dog is Bruno, a nine-year-old German Shepherd. They were partners for eight years. Bruno joined the force at fourteen months old. Trained in narcotics detection and patrol support. He and Alan were paired in the spring of Alan's sixth year on the force. From that first week, Alan said Bruno worked like he'd been waiting his whole life to do exactly that job. Eight years. Hundreds of calls. Bruno never missed a shift. Earlier this year, Bruno began slowing down significantly. A serious illness had progressed through his system over several months despite treatment. By October, Bruno had stopped eating consistently. Stopped lifting his head fully when Alan came into the room. The veterinary team sat with Alan two weeks ago and walked him through what was coming. Alan requested that Bruno's final day be spent at home first. They drove to their favorite trail in the morning. Bruno walked as far as he could. Alan carried him the rest of the way. At the clinic that afternoon, Alan sat down on the floor rather than placing Bruno on the examination table. He said he didn't want Bruno's last position to be somewhere unfamiliar and cold. He held Bruno in his arms on the floor, back against the wall. The vet, Dr. Melissa Horan, prepared the procedure. She told us she's been practicing for nineteen years. She has learned to give families as long as they need. Alan leaned down and pressed his face against Bruno's head. He spoke to him quietly. Told him he had been the best partner anyone could ask for. My 2nd trip to Memphis is almost over and I’ve again really enjoyed my time here. So I felt the need to say something, especially after what LeBron said today. This city often gets a very bad rep and I’ve experienced that myself. Players shitting on it, media saying it’s dangerous, people asking me why I’d go here because I wouldn’t be safe, I’ve heard it all. All those people couldn’t be more wrong. This is a city very different from other “typical American cities”. Memphis has it’s own identity, an identity that makes it special. Memphis is a very warm and welcoming city. From the second my first trip started last year I’ve felt welcomed by the people. In the Fedexforum, on the streets, in the airport, in my hotel. My experiences have been nothing but positive. Not once have I felt unsafe or anything remotely close to it, not in my week long stay last year and also not in my almost 2 week long stay this year. Now of course every city has its weaknesses and room for improvement. And that’s where I have to give a lot of credit to the mayor and the people who run this city. Even in the year between my trips there has been clear improvement. The streets are cleaner, there’s roadwork being done and downtown is noticeably more lively compared to last year. Don’t let people who have never been here tell you what and how this city is. Memphis is a unique and beautiful city, Memphis is Memphis. I have truly loved my time here and I can’t wait to keep coming back in the future. But first one more game against Toronto tomorrow.
