Remembering Sister Rosetta Tharpe, gone 50 years this month. Here she is performing “Up Above My Head” in Chicago in 1965. Her biographer, Gayle Wald, wrote that Sister Rosetta was ahead of her times not by years, but by decades. In the late 1960s, when she was asked about the then-current state of music, Sister Rosetta said, “Oh, these kids and rock and roll — that is just sped up rhythm and blues. I've been doing that forever.”
