Thomas Sowell on why rent control is so damaging: “If rent control is severe, people either reduce the amount of housing they build or they stop building housing altogether.” “Political authorities are then confronted with a situation where there’s no new housing built and the old housing is wearing out—usually faster under rent control because the landlords don’t have to keep it up as much.” “So they step in and have some kind of modification. They say, ‘We are trying to protect the poor, so we won’t regulate luxury housing.’” “Of course, luxury housing and ordinary housing use much the same labor and the same materials. Therefore, all the materials that would have otherwise gone into making ordinary housing go into building luxury housing.”

Sharon Wilson Géno, National Multifamily Housing Council NMHC president, tells Mimi Montgomery that New York and San Francisco are among two cities trying to apply outdated solutions to the housing crisis. Even with rent control, they have "the most expensive rental housing with the least quality, with the least amount of supply and options," she said. #AxiosLive

How can we understand the power of ideology? Stephen Kotkin offers up NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani as an example: “So there's this young kid who's really adept at social media who just looks like he won the primary for a Democratic candidate for mayor in New York City. And one of the things he wants to do is freeze rents because he wants more affordable housing. So he's a complete idiot in terms of facts. The way to get more affordable housing is to build more housing. If supply massively increases and it exceeds demand, the price has to go down. It's proven again and again and again. And what rent control does or freezing of rent, it inhibits the building of new housing. Because who's going to build new housing when you can't make money off of it? Rent control is what produces the lack of affordable housing in the first place. So he sees what's the problem as the solution now. Now, is he a fool? No, he's a really bright guy. He's very well educated.”

Seattle just handed out another $28 million bailout to affordable housing developers who can’t make their payments. That brings the total to $42 million in two years. Why? Because the policies pushed by the Seattle City Council – and echoed by legislative Democrats in Olympia – are making it harder to provide rental housing, including: ▶️Government rent control. ▶️No accountability when rent isn’t paid. ▶️Rules that make it impossible to manage properties. Small mom and pop housing providers don’t get bailouts. They go bankrupt, lose their properties, and Washington loses more affordable housing in the process. This is not sustainable. The Legislature needs to fix the policies that are causing these problems.

Why is Melbourne more affordable to buy or rent than the other big cities? Because we're building more homes everywhere to give young people more choice and more power in the market. The Liberals will reverse our changes, remove your choices, and make the housing crisis worse.

"Rent control is not going to be the solution to how we get through this crisis. We need to build more homes. I'm a no because if you look at the studies, you effectively halt production... I don't want to see housing production stopped." - Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey

Caleb Hammer explains why rent control doesn’t work “It’s one of those policies that sounds really good and really moral. You want to support it, landlords make less money and people pay less rent. But everywhere it’s been enacted, permitting has dropped significantly, and rents have gone up even faster for the average person, except for the few lucky ones in subsidized housing” “Units go untouched and aren’t maintained at all. I think something like 10-20% of rent controlled units in New York are empty because they can’t be brought up to standard, since it’s not worth investing in. In Massachusetts, rent control was a complete disaster and had to be repealed. In San Francisco, the moment they introduced it, permitting dropped. It just hasn’t worked”

Cea Weaver says the quiet part out loud.... "We decided that fighting for rent control was a strategic and critical first step in the fight for full social housing... We decided that through a program like rent control, we are able to directly challenge the logic of unfettered profit in the real estate market. We are able to directly challenge housing as a wealth-building tool and, through regulation, strike a blow to the entire real estate industry at once. The beauty of rent stabilization and rent control is that it weakens the speculative value of the real estate asset. The value is no longer based on what the landlord is able to get, but rather it’s based on a state public board deciding how much rent is going up. And yes, that board is controlled by the real estate industry, and yes, there could be a better way to regulate it. But the idea is that we could weaken the entire industry at once through a strong rent control campaign, and that would strengthen our ability to fight for social housing.” Serious question: How is this constitutional?

This is TEXTBOOK suicidal empathy White liberal woman acknowledges and agrees that 20-30 million illegals in America is making rent so expensive it’s making it hard for Americans to have kids and families and get jobs But she says she can’t bring herself to say “get out” “Hmm, maybe the rent is f*cking bullshit, and one of the reasons people aren't having families, getting married, having kids, is because everything is so f*cking expensive. One of the primary drivers of this is rent prices is housing prices. And so if you could free up the housing stock, 20 million housing stock in this country, that would drive down the housing prices, rent prices — it is a massive driver” White Liberal Woman “I can't bring myself to say, like, "Get out," But I know the economy would do much better, of course. There'd be more job openings. Like how you said rent would go down. I'm aware of those things, but it's just, I don't have the heart to, like, say that” This woman is saying that Americans shouldn’t be able to have kids and families because she doesn’t have the heart to tell illegal invaders on our taxpayers funded welfare to leave

Jim DeFede of CBS News Miami asks Angie Nixon why she joined the DSA if she is not a socialist: Because they fight for access to quality healthcare. They're fighting for allowing people to have control of the government. They are fighting to make sure that our schools are fully funded. They are fighting to make sure that people have housing. I guess you can say that I'm more of a a social democrat so to speak

People can’t afford to eat or make rent. On top of that, we pay more in taxes than we do in food, clothing, and housing COMBINED. Welcome to the golden age people!! 🤑🤡

American citizens are losing their minds finding out illegals have been getting Section 8 housing while they have to pay full rent “You're telling me with rent being like 50% of the average American's income, they're getting housing assistance, but we have to make full rent and live 3 people to an apartment. But we have to have roommates until our 30s. But these guys are getting housing assistance… Like I genuinely I am at the point where I'm starting to think that if you're an average American citizen, you should automatically qualify for welfare. Not because you don't make enough money, but just because they've given out so much to people who literally aren't supposed to even be here. Anyone who can't see how that's a problem, if nothing else, just because we pay into the system” “How many of these people say they're coming over here seeking asylum, but then they're ungrateful to the country that's willing to save their lives? Make it make sense.”

Today, I am proud to announce that I will be proposing “Zohran’s law," a law that will keep the rich out of New York’s affordable housing. Zohran Kwame Mamdani : you say freeze the rent. But for who? Rich people like you? Hardworking, working class New Yorkers are being pushed from their neighborhoods. Let’s build affordable housing that helps the people who need it. Under Zohran’s law, landlords can no longer rent vacant rent-controlled units to the wealthy. You are a rich person stealing affordable housing from the poor. And you’re not the only one. It’s past time we address this injustice. Let’s build a new NYC that works for the people who need it.
